This book was super similar to Beauty and the Beast, and I know that was what the author meant for it to be. I thought it was great. I like how the author wanted to make a modern-day Beauty and the Beast book, and he did a great job in doing so.
Retelling of Beauty and the Beast in the 21st Century. I read the first few chapters until the main character's family reacts to his transformation, then I found everything too predictable. I skipped to the last four chapters to see how it ultimately played out. I think Kate Bernheimer's edited collection of modern fairtales set a high bar for the genre of fairtales retold.
I'm vetting some books for a friend who wants to choose a YA novel for her month (April) for book club. I did enjoy Anything but Typical from the stack of 9 YA books that I'm reading. Others may enjoy Beastley, especially kids in middle school / high school who are struggling with that whole external beauty vs. beauty of character. It's just that I enjoy books that are very lyrical, books that have complex narrative structure (without being "experimental" in form), books about older adults, and books that are fact-filled (nonfiction and historical fiction). If the fairy tale dealt with the struggles of older adults, I would have been more engaged. It would be perfect for a non-popular young girl, fantasizing that a popular boy might gain some depth of character and show an interest in her.

Kyle Kingsbury has everything. Money, good looks, anything he wants, but what he doesn't have is compassion. Anyone to love. The witch from his English class curses with a monster's body. He must find someone that loves him and he loves back within a year, otherwise he would stay in that monster's body forever. Then he meets a girl. She teaches him the true meaning of love, but will they fall in love in time? Or will Kyle be stuck in that body forever?
This was a very intriguing novel. I learnt many lessons from it and it definitely was one of the best books that I have ever read!

A wonderful take on Beauty and the Beast. Can't wait to see the movie.
This.Book. Beauty and the Beast is my favorite Disney movie,so much so that it will be the theme of my wedding. When I began the book,I hated it. I wanted to smack Kyle in the face with his own book. But I persevered and I am beyond glad that I did. The love story was believable not some 3 day romance. It took place over a whole two years. I love how I went from absolutely hating Kyle to feeling bad for him. I mean what kind of father does that to their only child?! Anywho,I loved this book and will probably read it hundreds of times in the future. Also it is now added to my list of top favorites.
This book was interesting and a very typical love story. Beauty and the Beast. In part 1 it was good and at a good speed then the whole entire middle of the book was honestly really slow and kind of boring to read. Then you get to the end of part 5 and part 6 and that is when the book is really interesting again. The book is a very easy story to understand. I would recommend this book to read if you have nothing else to read. If you are reading this as a luxury read, I don't really recommend it. Overall this book was okay and is worth reading if you have time for it.

This fresh reimagining of Beauty and the Beast offers an engaging and accessible read, successfully highlighting the timeless theme of inner versus outer beauty. While the story starts off with a compelling and promising depth, its momentum falters towards the end. The narrative becomes overly simplistic and veers into cheesy territory, diminishing the impact of the meaningful lessons introduced earlier.
Cute quick read! I'm a sucker for Beauty and the Beast and Cinderella stories, so I probably enjoyed this more than it was worth, but I still really liked it. Definitely cheesy and predictable at times, but sometimes that's just what you need!
Why did I read this again ?
It could of been a really good book but they killed it with the little mermaid, the prince that turned into a frog.... Alex Flinn ruined a classic (the beauty and the beast)
