I read this book in two days. I’ve been craving some books containing queer women and so actively sought this out. It made me emotional thinking about the journey I have only just begun - becoming comfortable in my sexuality. Winterson’s writing is beautiful, simple and effective and yet suddenly veering into the philosophical and existential. A couple of pages before the end there is a section all about life and death. It is beautiful. Would recommend 100%.

Ooof.
First the community, the people, the parents was portrayed so perfectly, so hilariously
The crush just snuck in there for me. I barely noticed it until... well
And then ooof
I should have seen that coming
It was kind of obvious.
But oof.
Serving ice cream.

I was assigned Oranges are Not the Only Fruit for a literature studies unit in University. Shaking off the shackles of required reading, I decided to read it of my own accord, now three years later.

Jeanette Winterson’s semi-biographical account of her own coming-of-age experience is intriguing and intimate. She has woven fairy tale and legend in to her own less-than-fully-reliable account of her childhood. She makes it clear that history and memory are not as reliable as we may think.

Her experience of discovering, and subsequently being punished and ostracized for, her blossoming sexuality and lesbian identity, is both empowering and saddening. Her personal relationship with religion, and it's hand in her abuse, is equally saddening.

A truly wonderful book.
