I feel like I need to give an explanation if I’m going to rate an Octavia Butler book 3 stars. I thought it was a little slow and not as engaging as Kindred. I don’t really respect Earth Seed as a belief system. Maybe it’s bitterness from the religious trauma lol. I think Lauren is a little full of herself thinking she discovered this new religion. Like what authority does she have to say it’s true? But what bothered me the most was the relationship between Lauren and Bankole. It was so gross and I had a hard time reading their scenes together. I wish the book had gone in a different direction by making their relationship similar to a father-daughter bond. That could have been really meaningful and healing but instead I see him as a predator and her as naive and arrogant.

i read this book for a college english class and really liked it! there’s lots of relatable, thought-provoking quotes and parallels to real-life issues that make you think and reflect on what’s going on around you. and it goes without saying, but butler’s writing is phenomenal <3

I enjoyed it from the start, excited to read the next one.

I do kind of feel like something is missing though like there could be more to the story and some bits felt unresolved but maybe that’s what the next one’s for…
