Love Love Loved this story! I enjoyed this story via Audible and I want to begin by giving the narrator, Adjoa Andoh, massive kudos. As a phenomenal storyteller, she breathed life into Adunni through deeply emotive reading and wonderfully accented narration.
Adunni, the girl who strives to have a louding voice, wants nothing more than to go to school. But, her family is downtrodden by her mother's death and endless financial woes, and her father elects to marry her off as a third wife to an older man. Cornered without options, little Adunni finds pockets of joy in her life through friendship and her tenacious hope, and eventually, she stumbles onto another path far from her arranged marriage. Now, as a housekeeper to a wealthy yet abusive woman, Adunni navigates a new life in the big city of Lagos.
What I liked: this story is about deeply challenging obstacles—many of which are arguably insurmountable—and yet there is humor. The moments of irony and levity are authentic, and I deeply enjoyed the laughter shared between Adunni and her allies.
What I loved: What made Adunni's tale unique and vibrant was how [a:Abi Daré|19300129|Abi Daré|https://images.gr-assets.com/authors/1596276879p2/19300129.jpg] (and narrator Andoh) made Adunni's pain and joy tangible. Truly, her emotions seeped into me! This story was un-put-downable and I would highly recommend it to anyone, really, but especially readers who enjoyed [b:Homegoing|27071490|Homegoing|Yaa Gyasi|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1448108591l/27071490._SY75_.jpg|47113792], [a:Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie|19992417|Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie|https://images.gr-assets.com/authors/1628721308p2/19992417.jpg], and fiction that grapples with race and class.
Fav Quote: We all be speaking different because we all are having different growing-up life, but we can all be understanding each other if we just take the time to listen well.
Trigger Warnings: sexual assault, domestic abuse, violence against women.

The whole book was written in dialect which took a little bit of getting used to at the beginning (especially as at the beginning, there was more broken English as the main character was still learning). Overall, the characters were memorable and had a good amount of depth.
This is a really good book and incredibly sad but oddly optimistic. There were times it got a little slow for me which made it a touch boring, that’s why I’m giving it 4 instead of 5. But it really is an interesting story and a lot of lessons to come from it.

Unbelievable - I thought I was listening to historical fiction, and had to double-check that this is still happening in the world (the story takes place in 2014). Heartbreaking and inspirational at the same time.
HIGHLY recommend the audiobook. The narrator is amazing, brings life to the characters, accents, dialect, emotion.

It’s really just a lovely book and takes a truthful look at gender roles, human trafficking and so much more. But it also inspires and the heroine is such a wonderfully written character.
