This is the debut novel. It is like an oral storytelling feel. The narrator, Adunni, is a 14 year old Nigerian. Told by her pov in first-person. The dialogue is non-standard English, and the author actually wrote it to reflect Adunni's age, education, and background. The tone is harsh, and the themes are of gender inequality, child marriage, servitude, and education in the early 2000s in Nigeria. Very powerful.

I was shocked when I finally figured out the year this novel takes place--I felt like it was years ago, and then, bam, nope, good old selling of children and slavery is alive and well in many countries. Strong novel set in Nigeria about a young girl determined to go to school to improve her life, instead of marrying old men and working as a house-cleaner. We should all raise our children to the "girls of the louding voice."
