3.9 AVERAGE

I'm a 17 year old classics student and not ashamed to say that I bought this at groovy Greeks live (where I also met Terry Deary). As a child I remember starting this book and not really liking it because of all the complicated Greek names, I couldn't really understand a lot of it but this time around I enjoyed looking at the ancient Greeks from a child's perspective and seeing how actually ridiculous they often were. Wasn't really a fan of all the quizzes and games but it's a kids book, I'm not really the target audience. Would recommend for older children (11-13) as some of the language is a little complicated, but I'm no expert.

I read all of the horrible histories book when I was younger and I even collected the magazines. I picked this up because I felt a bit nostalgic and I'm glad I did because it still had the ability to force a smile out of me, just like it did all those years ago. I would recommend these books to children and even adults, while it is written to engage and be understood by children and presented through various means such as quizzes, sketch story boards etc, it will probably make you smile at least once and you might learn something you never knew before. These books started off my deep interest and love for the ancient Greeks, Romans, and ancient Egyptians. I could never give this book any less than five stars, as it excels at what it is trying to do. It makes history fun and interesting for children, as I remember my primary school history classes, wasn't such an easy thing to do.

I own the entire set of horrible histories and yet I’ve never read them. I’m gonna slowly make my way through. It was funny and nostalgic, didn’t teach me much but hey ho I’m a grown woman.

This review is 100% my own opinion!

Despite loving the Groovy Greeks in the TV show, I didn’t enjoy the book as much as I expected. I think the main thing was the fact that this book jumps around quite a bit, going backwards and forwards during the Greek timeline which confused me a little bit. I would have preferred things to have been more chronological but this was just a personal preference!

I also got a little confused at times with the names of kings etc which made it a little hard to keep up with. I guess I haven’t really read too much about Greek history before so perhaps after doing some more research, this book would be easier to follow.

Despite this, I did enjoy this book - more than The Stone Age but not as much as the Egyptians. I enjoyed learning about Alexander the Great (he is my favourite historical figure) and the Greek inventions, the Greek gods and day to day life as a Greek during this timeline. It was interesting learning about the Olympic Games as well and this book did have the same humour as previous books.

Overall, I was a little disappointed with Groovy Greeks as a book, especially after loving the clips in the TV show and since Alexander the Great is my favourite historical figure. I think I just enjoyed Awesome Egyptians so much that I was expecting this one to be even better, but sadly was disappointed a little. But for an introduction to Greek history, I do recommend this book and it gives a good foundation for further research! I’m looking forward to continuing this series!

I remembered reading this as a kid when these books genuinely made me love History. Safe to say that revisiting this was just as fun and as interesting as I remember - though definitely not as horrible.

Leuk boek dat ik vroeger las. Je springt wel heen en weer, en in combinatie met alle gekke naam en vraag ik me echt af hoe ik dit vroeger snapte haha

History with the nasty bits left in!

I’m getting closer and closer to the end of my Horrible Histories list and with every book that I finish I feel more and more nostalgic for this series. I also think I’m going to be a bit sad when the journey is over which is a bit odd but what can I say.

I think one of the reasons that a lot of people are intrigued by the Ancient Greeks is that they are seen as the cradle of modern civilisation, and we still carry out a lot of modern functions that they created. That isn’t to say that other civilisations weren’t as important but the Greeks do enjoy a certain importance in history.

I don’t know, it just seems like quite a widespread enjoyment, even down to modern retellings of Greek myths. It’s quite incredible really.

Good, fun history for kids.
