Phwoar! Loved the fantasy and potential stories here. This is more fantasy than romantasy.

Banter was often fun. Some of the lyrical writing worked (especially with the prologue).  The volume of writing attempting to be lyrical and floral in the first person POV chapters were too clunky. you don’t see enough difference in the head narratives of the raeve and Kaan povs.

some plot choices of miscommunication and holding back missed opportunity for the characters to collaborate and find ways around the villains. This is a common issue with books in these genres.

I have enough notes on  the writing choices annoyed me that it drops the writing down.

Carnal knowledge ? Eloquently dressed ? The characters insults got tied when it’s about small brains and small cocks.

Bloated similes and metaphors that aren’t clear to understand. @morelemonheads on Reddit described it well : “ the writing so often like an upside down triangle: rumination paragraph, summary of that paragraph, shorter summary, two words, one word. Hundreds of times she follows that formula in her writing. Irritating.”

I was annoyed by the publishing choices of the glossary and especially the family tree. I accidentally clocked the spoiler info when I was trying to check a term in the glossary. this spoiled two important plot points,

Overall, these flaws dont diminish my eagerness to read this book again. The writing

More reflections to add after my initial book hangover.

I listened to this book first and foremost. It might have better to physically read this. I felt a bit lost up until half way through. I do want to mention I loved the world that this book took place in. It would make for a cinematic movie. The way the dragons were explained and the world building was good.

The main character was driving me insane for most of the book. 😞
There was no growth and her anger seemed so unhinged at times. Like she’s smart and powerful but her smart remarks were not thought out well. A lot of repetitive usage of words. It all seemed rushed when it came to the writing. The use of the word fuck seemed so out of place BUT maybe it’s because I listened to the book. 🤷🏼‍♀️ idk. The main male character was cool but I felt so bad for him.  I would read the next book when it comes out because I want to know how this war and all the secrets play out.

When I first heard about this book I heard it described as a fantasy novel that could stand on its own if there was no romance, but also a romance novel that could stand on its own if there was no fantasy. Upon completion both are certainly true. When the Moon Hatched has easily found its way into a shortlist of my favorite books of all time.

I have to say the main reason for my rating is because of the care the author put into creating this world. I heard her speak to the time she put into the world and the magic system. That she got lost in it fully understanding it before creating the story of the main characters and beyond. I adored this book and cannot wait for book two. Although I want Sarah to take her time with it. With the amount of care that went into this book I know it's going to be good.

The author did not make cohesive connections.

The beginning was written in a poetic prose/ waxed lyrical…. Some plot holes were not yet addressed in book 1.

The audio book gave more clarity through the male/female character voices. But had One not listened to the audio, there might have been some confusion.

The end of the book randomly began to swap from 4 different perspectives.

This is not a light read. Takes some concentration.

I cried so many times, two of those times I had to put the book down. Crying so hard I couldn't continue.

Wow. Such a beautiful writing style, and a sad tale.

Wow! This book was just amazing! I fell in love with everything about this story and these characters. I think Raeve might be my favourite FMC ever now. And Kaan…well Kaan is just the most 🖤🖤🖤 man ever! I can’t wait to see where this will all go with the next installment!

When the moon hatched

This book was just WOW!! The world building was unique and well done. It took a hot minute to get use to all the different words and creatures but once I did I was hooked. Pro tip: there’s a glossary in the front, refer to that often. I read this on my kindle so that made it a little difficult.
There was a lot of gore at the beginning and I struggled with it to the point I almost DNFd but I’m SO glad I didn’t because this quickly became one of my top reads this year!
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️💫

When the moon hatched follows Reave, an assassin who works for rebel forces. Her goal is to make the kingdom she lives in a better place; Until she seeks revenge due to a tragic event and gets caught. She’s thrown in the dungeon to wait for her trial where a mysterious man comes by and is immediately drawn to her. He’s feeling crazy because he swears he knows her and she has no idea who he is but she’s drawn to him and unsure why.

Reave is a strong FMC who doesn’t take anyone’s crap and gets things done.

Kaan is chefs kiss. He is everything!

The love story is so heart wrenching, achingly beautiful. The spice is spicing 🥵
There are so many twists and turns that keep you guessing.
The relationship between fae and dragons was so well done and different than your average story.

✨Banter

✨Corrupt kingdom

3.5 stars 🌟 This was a solid beginning to a new series. I really liked the world and felt like it was unique, something I havent read before! However, I wished there was more yearning and pining. For some reason I couldn't really obsessed over the romance which was a disappointment. However, I really like all the other characters we are introduced too and I can tell there is a lot of promise for the next book. I'm excited to see how the story unfolds and will definitely pick up the sequel.

I did not like the chapters where the main character partakes in trials with a tribe in the burn. It felt in poor taste the way they spoke and were protrayed. Also there is a big intentional miscommunication trope/hiding information and it irked me to no end. It lasted the whole book! I know there were reasons for the lack of communication but those reasons didnt work for me the way they were written. It felt like the main character was being childish and avoiding a past she supposedly didnt remember. It got under my skin a lot. The ending still redeemed it for me but it definitely was something that was hard for me to get past.
