An excellent beginning to a new series featuring a complicated and complex protagonist in a modern, chaotic China. Looking forward to reading more of the series.

Interesting because I enjoy reading about China; there were many discrepancies though. None of the characters were likable.

I read the second book in the series and this is the first one-it's much the same with a frazzled Ellie doing a walkabout all over China. It's another tour de China as Ellie chases ghosts in a virtual Second Life game all the while being chased by an American security corporation. Or is the Chinese Security Bureau after her too? Suits are always finding her in the remotest places. All this to help a friend who is just an artist. Her marriage is over and she's never quite sure who has her interests covered. It gets downright ugly-GITMO ugly, but she survives and ends up with a good gig.

Very different than what i normally read. A little slow start, about half way thru, the story picked up.

Interesting descriptions of modern China, Iraqi war crimes and veteran PTSD, etc. But ultimately, I was quite disappointed in the ending, which colored my view of the whole book.

I enjoyed the intimate picture of China that I got from this, but in the end it was a little disappointing.

I really liked this book. I thought the plot was rather interesting and original. Possibly not the best written, and a little predictable in places, but an interesting story. Definitely worth reading.

Excellent thriller, especially strong for its Chinese setting and the interplay between the main character's previous time as a medic in the Iraq war and her present-day difficulties.
