"Hex bags and voodoo dolls, and that was from within the safety of her [own] demon-possessed house. What would happen if she tried to go into town?" loc1672 Kindle ebook

Thank you to Cass Kay and NetGalley for a gifted digital ARC to read of this book.

"Witch fiction" is a new genre for me, but one of the things that I do really love about it is in plenty of supply here in Cass Kay's LEGACY WITCHES and that's the emphasis on family-- born or found. For that matter, the end of this book is the freaking best, and the form is nice too in the way it sort of opposes the beginning not just in position but in tone, outlook, and of course this important subject to witchcraft. Family.

I had a difficult time at first finding my way, but once I did, this was an easy story to enjoy. This is such a witchy book! Herbs, Spells, Lore! My favorite scene is the one in which the ghost Csada attacks the fmc Vianna with a voodoo doll-- disconcerting and darkly funny all at once!

3.5⭐ rounded up.

Featuring ~ single 3rd person POV, paranormal, haunted house, witches, ghosts, graphic violence, assault, murder, animal death, transgender character

I haven't read too many books about witches as it's not my typical genre, but I was delighted that Cass reached out and asked me to read and review her debut book.

Vianna fled Salem 10 years ago, but has returned to bury her mother. She comes from a long line of witches and has the ability to see ghosts. I think it would be fun to be able to see ghosts, but I could also see how it could get bothersome. Some of the ghosts seemed very realistic, especially with all the beetles.
There was a little mystery about Nancy that I was eager to see how it would play out. Many of the witches are not likable, but Vianna held her own and fought back when necessary. I really enjoyed Vianna and Dee's friendship.

Overall, a solid debut that had a slow start for me, but I found to be well written, researched and very descriptive. I think this book would definitely appeal to those that normally enjoy this genre. Perfect for spooky season reading. I liked reading Cass's note about how the book came about.

Thank you to Netgalley and the publishers for the opportunity to read and review this book. This was an outstanding debut novel for Cass Kay. I am a sucker for a witch story and this one was so special and incredible. Vienna has to go home to Salem for her mother’s burial 10 years after she left. Faced with the decision of what to do with the house she was left and feeling very unwelcome by the covens, Vienna is forced to make some hard decisions about her future while also trying to solve a mystery from her past that hit way too close to home. Did I mention the demon? Or the ghosts? This story has it all and I’m so excited to learn what comes next in the series.

3.5. Nice mixup from the slog of mediocre fantasy books I’ve read lately, and it was surprisingly wholesome even with all the dead people.

I got this book from Twisted Retreat, and there was a printing error where a few pages of a chapter got repeated. They notified us and the author was nice enough to send out ebook versions of this book to make up for it, but I downloaded it on my Kindle and the same repeating in chapter 27 happened in the ebook too so I’m a little confused about that.

Wow. 10 out of 10. This was a beautiful book to get me into the spooky season and I’m enchanted by the characters and by Salem. The writing flowed effortlessly and I found myself staying up all night to keep reading one more chapter. The story of the Roots family had me captivated and I cannot wait for book two. I was an ARC Reader through Net Galley and I 100% will be purchasing my own copy so I can reread it again.

This was a 4 ⭐ for me!

I received a free copy of this ARC from Netgalley in return for my honest review below.

Non-spoiler review - When her mother passes away Vianna returns to Salem - a town, history, and legacy she ran from 10 years ago. She plans to bury her mother, bind her to the grave, sell the family home and take the money from the sale and never look back. Fate has other plans when the family familiar becomes bonded to her and she sees the death loop of her childhood friend in the bathroom.

Plot 4/5
Pace 3/5
Character Personality 4/5
Character Growth 4/5
Spice 0/5 (this book isn’t really romance so there isn’t really much)
Writing Style 3.5-4/5
World Building 4/5 (it’s contemporary/urban paranormal and most people understand the general ideologies of Salem and its history so there wasn’t much building required)

I definitely enjoyed this book for spooky season! It had creepy moments, a strong FMC with a desire to break generational expectations to be murderous assassins, a hilarious supportive best friend, and plenty of suspense.

I did find myself at times getting a bit bored but then things would pick up again. I went into this book completely blind and was really happy I read it. I will be reading the next book when it comes out.
