I really liked the framing structure of the book and the way the narrator became part of the story. i liked the synergy between the past and present. i liked how the incident at the core of the story drove the characters and how it seeped into their life. perhaps the reason it’s not five stars is i felt that something’s could have been explored more explicitly in the story. i wish we could have seen more of Opal and Nev’s interactions with one another than we got in the book.

I tried so hard to love this book. I loved the format and the characters, but something was off about it. I kept getting bored or sleepy while reading it. A 350 page book usually takes me a few days to read and this one took a month. I can’t pinpoint exactly what it was that I didn’t like, but it wasn’t for me. Maybe it was the format in which it was written? The “twist” that happened? The ending that was meh? I can’t really tell.
