A beautiful collection of poetry, short stories, and a short play from Hillfire Press. It packs lots of humour, heartbreak, and suspense into one gorgeous volume. I enjoyed all of the pieces and am particularly fond of "Capricorn" by Alexandra Ye and "Jack and Jeanitta Fall Apart" by Nicole Christine Caratas -- both of which I was fortunate to see read aloud by the authors at the anthology's live launch at Typewronger Books in Edinburgh. I love how pretty it looks next to Volume 2 on my shelf!

A collection of short prose and poetry from 33 emerging authors who all met during various creative writing degrees in Edinburgh. Hillfire Anthology brings together unique voices from around the world and different genres including literary fiction, comedy, speculative fiction and social critique.

In this collection there are beautiful pieces of writing, some which shine a light on the ordinary of this world, whilst others journey into unknown worlds and dreamlike places. The varying style and content of each piece of writing means there really is something for everyone.

Review ~

I thoroughly enjoyed diving into this unique anthology. There’s something special about turning the page and discovering something completely different. There were many pieces of writing that I enjoyed but I’ve picked three of my favourites.

✨️A Sea in My Stomach by Bhavika Govil
“One day I woke up and swallowed the sea”. Writing can often be open to interpretation and for me this was about a women experiencing depression and the journey she went on. I loved this ambitious and creative prose.

✨️Tumble by David Blakesee – An endearing piece of writing giving character and personality to one of our most mundane objects, the tumble drier. I loved the perspective of ‘Tumble’ it made for a charming and amusing read.

✨️Sleepwalkers by Thomas Carroll – An observation on the subtle changes during the gradual breakdown of a relationship, in particular the small noticeable changes within the monotonous step by step actions and daily communications in life. I loved it!

I think its wonderful that @hillfire_press has bought together these pieces to support writers and shine a spotlight on new and upcoming talent. It's been a joy to be a part of this book tour.

Firstly, thank you to Hillfire press for gifting me a copy of this anthology for an honest review.

Made up of poems and short stories, Hillfire Press have created this annual collective celebrating the joy of writing as an art form.  Each piece of work holds its own unique story, each important as the last.  Some are personal, important, environmental, mythological… and some read like an episode of black mirror (my favourites).  Whatever you’re into this anthology has a story for you.

I love when people work together to amplify each other’s voices and support and encourage each other’s artform.  This anthology is just that, and I can’t wait for the next one.
