funny lighthearted tense fast-paced

I don't like these books much but my kids do and my youngest is getting into them now. So who am I to argue? If they are into reading, I will read.

I find Greg a repellent and unlikeable character but this story separates him out from Rowley and sticks him with his family on the road trip from hell. As such, it's more fun, watching the bad stuff happen to him rather than because of him. There are some amusing set pieces and the story is aimless but it kept bedtime enjoyable.

I’ve now read this one over 10 times now. For some reason it’s a favourite of my 7 year old. We’ve just reread as part of our journey through the series. This one has not grown on me!

So far the best one in the series imo.
It was a total riot and a divergent one (as opposed to the rest of the books mostly set in Greg's house, school and neighbourhood), this was wholly about the family taking a flexible, fun and smooth (at least what they hoped) trip.
A lot of unexpected and wildly funny things happen over the course of this weekend trip, like a swarm of seagulls entering the car, and when the family loses all their valuables and had to somehow make it back home in their car (thankfully with a full tank), Manny speaking flawless Spanish and getting them out of trouble and much more.
Can't wait to read the rest of the 9 books that are left in the series!!
Go, Greg!!

I loved this one but oh my god. Definitely partially cured my baby fever because planning family stuff sounds so stressful. I loved the pig tho, so cute

I have resisted reading any Diary of a Wimpy Kid books because I know they are not my style and I knew I probably would not enjoy it. I was right, but I can see why these are popular with the kids. There is nothing truly terrible about this book, I just like a little more depth and story with my story.

The Heffley's take a road trip is the basic premise of this book. They are off to see the sites but end up driving past a lot of them because Manny has to take naps. They end up staying in horrible hotels. They win a piglet at a fair and it causes all kinds of mayhem. They seem to be constantly around a strange family. There are car accidents and lost keys and all kinds of craziness.

There were a few things I found just downright unbelievable. First, mom springs the vacation on the family with no notice. Basically they are going to leave the next day. Dad hasn't even asked for time off from work. In the real world this would never happen. There is no way an employer is just going to let you take a week off with no notice. Second, they win a piglet at the fair and are required to take it. What kind of people thrust an innocent pig on vacationers? Third, the parents give the locker key to the kids even though the kids are definitely not reliable and all your valuables are locked in the locker. There are other crazy things that I could overlook, but those were just too much for me. Of course, I realize I am not the intended audience for this book and that audience will have no problems with these things.

While other "Wimpy Kid" books made Greg Heffley into a manipulative brat by having him deceive and take advantage of others (poor Rowley), this book returns to the series' original brilliance with hilarity that doesn't demean. "The Long Haul" is one of the best in the series, and I admit to laughing out loud at a bunch of different parts in the book.

This was so funny! My favorite so far.
