If you're looking to mindlessly crush through a rom com, you know exactly what you're getting with this book. I found it entertaining to really reflect on how my conceptions of gender norms and relationships were influenced by this late 90's/early 00's rigid and

This has to be one of the best Nicholas Sparks books that I've read. I loved Taylor, Denise, and Kyle. It's such a beautiful story of love and family.

What do you do when its pouring rain and a deer is in the middle of the street, yet you're coming at it at 70 mph? Swerve so you don't hit it, which is exactly what Denise Holton did, and it didn't go very well. However, because of that swerve, she met her savior Taylor McAden, who saved her and her son Kyle's life.

Denise is a single mother (one night stand with an oops!) of four year old Kyle, who has a learning disability. She lives in her parents old home in Edenton, North Carolina and works as a waitress. She makes just enough to pay the bills, yet something is missing from her life.

Taylor is a contractor, who remodels for a living. On the side, he volunteers with the fire department. He's had some serious relationships, but they always ended. He has yet to find that spark.

One dark rainy night is how Denise and Taylor meet. And thought they didn't know it yet, they were destined to find each other.

This book was interesting. I liked how Taylor and Denise's relationship began to grow, all because of Kyle. Taylor treated Kyle as he deserved to be treated, and that was exactly what Denise needed if she was going to let someone in her (and her son's) life.

Spoiler I really liked when Taylor and Denise had their super long talk and how everything about Taylor just flowed out of him. Why he can never let anyone in, why he always needs to help people, why he's been broken for so long. He finally was able to accept what happened, I don't know if he was able to move on, but he finally decided to stop letting his fear control him so he could make his life worth living. I thought the explanation when Melissa confronted him about the topic was great, because she finally understood (in some perspective) what he was going through.

(WARNING: this spoiler will ruin the book for you. You have been warned.)
SpoilerI CANNOT BELIEVE HE KILLED MITCH. I did not see that coming whatsoever. Like I didn't even skim to the end of the page and when I read it, my mouth dropped open. I couldn't believe Sparks decided to kill of the best friend. Honestly, I was expecting him to kill Taylor off, but then he spun around and did this crap. I just couldn't believe that he left Melissa alone with four boys to raise on her own. I was so shocked. It was a good shock though because I had no idea that was going to occur.

Spoiler The one thing I didn't like was the epilogue. I felt that it was very unnecessary and honestly dumb. I didn't like that they were already married, built a house from scratch, had a new son (yes, naming the son Mitch was super adorable but still), and more. Like, I understand that you are happy to be together, but Denise opened her heart up to Taylor and then he smashed it. Yes, I'm glad she forgave him, but I feel like it would take a little bit of time before she trusts him again because he hurt her immensely when he forgot about the baseball game. I don't know, in my opinion, the book could have done without the epilogue.

All in all, this was a good read. I liked the adventure with Taylor as a firefighter, I liked the conflict that arouse. I thought it was very well written, the conflicts were well explained, and if anyone wants a good summer read, this is one. It'll take a shorter time for you to read it than I did though because I literally had no time to read these past two weeks! Happy Reading!
lighthearted slow-paced

Good book. Not completely typical Nicholas Sparks but the story line is very good and easy to follow.

Another very enjoyable read by Nicholas Sparks. A heartwarming story of family, friendships and love which I have no hesitation in recommending.
