The only other Nicholas Sparks novel that I've cried while reading was "A Walk to Remember." By the ending of this book, I was crying so hard my cat was eyeing me suspiciously.
"The Rescue" is a slow read in the beginning. The material is not boring or anything, but it doesn't make you want to read more. I seem to notice this pattern with most of Sparks's novels. Somewhere in the middle the pace picks up and by the end you can't put the book down. I spent most of the week trying to get to the good part and then from there, I read fast.
Overall, I really enjoyed the story. Sparks tends to pick interesting characters, usually those with harder lives or disabilities, so there isn't much surprise here. Like I said, just keep reading because the first part is harder to get into.

So while the title insinuated that there was going to be a rescue of some sort, I didn't realize that it was going to be of the main character. I thought this book was going to be completely about Kyle and how he got lost in the swamp. I didn't realize that that would be over in less than 100 pages and that the rest of the book would just be character development. While I was disappointed about that, I actually did like learning about the characters and how they have progressed throughout the book, and how successful the rescue actually was.

Very predictable, but still a lovely tear jerker nonetheless.

Quotes:
- These days she simply did the best job she could accepting the good with the bad, looking for joy in the Little things.
- It wasn't that she looked glamorous or elegant; it was more that she radiated a natural beauty, a woman who knew she was attractive but didn't spend all day thinking about it.
- You are going to come across people in your life who say all the right words at all the right Times. But in the end, it's always their actions you should judge them by. It's actions, not words, that matter.
- People come, people go-they'll drift in and out of your life, almost like characters in a favorite book. When you finally close the cover, the characters have told their story and you start up again with another book, complete with new characters and adventures. Then you find yourself focusing on the new ones, not the ones from the past.
- Some people were uncomfortable with silence, considering it a void that needed to be filled, but he obviously wasn't one of them.
- Everything was just right, as she had barely dared to hope it would be.
Or, if possible, even better than that.
- Even now, not a day goes by when I don't wish I could turn back the clock and change what happened.
- There was something inside her that longed to be desired, to be cared for and protected, to be listened to and ac-cepted without judgment. To be loved.
- I'm glad that I was the one you came to.
