Ok, and I love Jared Diamond, but "Sex at Dawn" is more up-to-date, more comprehensive, and more fun.
Well, we learn a lot about interpersonal relationships in this book.
We learn about birds, too.
We learn about possible causes for menopause, and also possible reasons that the human male's penis is larger than it needs to be in order to procreate.
We don't learn much, though, on why we feel sex is fun.
It's a good book to learn about human behavior, families, parental compulsions, and the innate need to procreate.

DNF @30%. There was a lot of questionable material when the author was discussing pregnancy and lactation, and then I gave up when he got super bio essentialist in talking about chromosome abnormalities and it frankly got transphobic as there was no mention of queer or trans people at all. If there was a little later after I quit the book, it was clearly too little too late.
This book was published in 1997. Underline this fact ! Most of his conclusions are outdated now or highly unacceptable. For me, it's all of them. Because, the way he postulated his theories is bizarre and very superficial. Am sure scientific thinking has no timeline whether its 1997 or 2023. A few of his books are on my to-read list so i picked this book up , also because there are not many peer reviewed mainstream books on sexual medicine. Utter time waste. He did not take into consideration a lot of existing(by 97) scientific studies on female sexuality. No anatomical studies were taken into consideration. Forget biochemical studies. Only hunter-gatherer societies (as if no other societies existed) were taken for interpretation and he took everything that supports marketed ideas of human sexuality. Very much biased.
I enjoyed parts of this book. I liked the way Diamond investigated certain areas of human life, such as how males became part of the care of babies and children, and how this is reflected in certain areas of New Guinea. But in saying that, I couldn't really get myself into it. I wanted to- I did, as sexology interests me- but I felt Diamond kept veering into other directions.
However, from an anthropological standpoint, this is a good, interesting book. It doesn't all deal with why humans have sex for fun and enjoyment, but it looks into the development of sex outside of ovulation, and how the idea of family developed.
So a good book, if you're into that sort of thing.

yaaa...
jared emang pinter cerita.
