The Gate Thief

Orson Scott Card

3.53 AVERAGE

Really hard to finish this one. Writing was just awful. I'm a big fan of Card but missed the mark big time on this one. Felt very rushed and character development was nonexistent. Liked the first one of this series but this was just a poor attempt at building on the firsts success.

You know, the worst thing about this book was that the afterword was an explanation of the book being 6 months late because he had to rewrite the book and how he's a better writer now than he used to be. Well, I've got to say, this book is not proof of that. All of the characters were stupid this time around. I actually gave the first book 4 stars. I wonder what happened. Bummer.

It's a great book and feels like this book is a bridge to the last book, lots of setting up world rules but lots of story telling.

I really enjoyed this series overall! OSC can do fantasy as well as sci-fi when he puts his mind to it and this was a world he worked on for many many years!

You know a book is good when you're yelling OMG (multiple times) at the end. I know the next book(s) in the series have been much delayed, but will keep them on my radar.

Love the mythology, hate the writing and the characterisation. Somehow both boring and misogynistic, I couldn’t wait for it to end

Wanted to like this book but agreed with other reviewers that the sexism is awful in this book. Won't be reading the last one in the trilogy.

Card really steps up his game with his second edition to the Mither Mages series. The Gate Thief follows the life of Danny North, just your average teenage boy, full of angst and hormones, who also happens to be the most powerful mage of his time, with the most coveted of magics, Gates. After coming face to face with The gate Thief and winning, Danny now holds more power then he knows what to do with, but his nativity, and youthful ability to trust in people leads him down a path he never expected to have to follow. Now is the time for Danny to learn who is real friends and family are, who the real threat to the worlds is, and most importantly, he begins to discover who he really is, and what he is capable of.

Nearing the end of this book I was ready for this story to come to an end.
I waited for it all to be wrapped up nice and neat so that I could finally put it all to rest, and just as I felt settled with the events... BAM, this book leaves me on the hook and makes me want more. The gate Thief is the perfect second novel to a trilogy, filled with action and wild adventures that leaves the reader with more questions then they went in with. By the end, all you want is to get your hands on the last novel to satisfy your NEED to know what happens next, to help put at ease all those worries about what's next for the characters we have come to love, and the thirst for vengeance on those who we have come to hate.

Will Danny be able to defeat his big bad? Will he ever be satisfied being an outcast among outcasts? Which side of him will win, the decent man he grew to be, or his trickster nature?
I can't wait to read Gatefather and find out!
