The ninth of the Sharon McCone books is a complex tale of adultery and murder.

Sharon is hired to follow a rancher around the city on a Sunday, and he visits various nurseries and horticultural markets. When she returns to report to her client, she finds an unknown woman panicking in shock and her client dead.

The police want to pin the murder on a homeless man (possibly a veteran) who somewhat functioned as a doorman for the client in return for beer and a shed to sleep in.

Mental illness swirls in the background - her assistant’s husband, a rich activist, an alcoholic ranch owner.

This one had me guessing right up to the end. Some fascinating character studies.

Not my favorite McCone mystery, but not really sure why. It was fun to go back and read about the early days at the co-op.

Marcia Muller's Sharon McCone series never fails to disappoint. If you are a fan of Sue Grafton's Kinsey Milhone series, this will be right up your alley as Sharon is the first female P.I. and the precursor to Grafton's Kinsey. I have yet to read one of Muller's books that I haven't enjoyed.
