This was a great introduction into Octavia Butler for me. The writing style was gripping and the characters were fantastic. The plot was heavy but in a realistic way (especially for a dystopian, it made sense and is even more eerie to read in 2024). I wasn’t a big fan of the “starting a religion” stuff, though.

I liked this book a lot! But it’s very dark. Extremely dark. Bad things happen a lot. It’s a valuable commentary on our present state, and I would like to come back to this. But right now my mental health isn’t in the place to finish this book.

This book is one of those books that will stay with me for a while. It’s a difficult one to read because of its frighteningly relevance of themes that we sadly see today. It’s a brilliant read. It’s my first read of Octavia Butler’s, but it definitely won’t be my last.

wow. this is such a harrowing story that bears terrifying resemblance to modern day America. Octavia Butler’s words and infinitely quotable and leave me feeling simultaneously heartbroken and hopeful.

The low score is more due to personal preference - the book is well written and very evocative, but the subject matter was dark beyond my taste. It's an interesting book, and I do appreciate that it ends with a bit of trepidatious hope rather than the despair that pervades most of its pages. It's a novel that definitely needs to be chewed on to understand and grasp, but I have a difficult time wanting to do that with its bleakness; which may be part of the point.
