I want to begin this review by saying fuck you, Hiro Arikawa.

Anyway.

What a wonderful book. I went into this expecting nothing much but came out of it feeling like I'd actually changed from reading it. It has such an interesting structure and amazing characterisation surrounding its rather simple premise. Each chapter, you learn more about Satoru's life and his relationship with Nana. Going into it, I was most interested regarding reading from a cat's perspective and while I loved those parts, I actually found the best parts to be when we learnt more about Satoru's youth, where we also get deeper insight into the characters he goes to meet to give Nana away through their shared experiences – it's just structured so nicely and I never felt like I was reading something that wasn't important. Satoru is also just such a loveable character, and I really felt like with each visit to a particular character, he left them for the better. The crowning jewel is of course Satoru's relationship with Nana, it's just so nice to read about. The entire novel, you just have a warm feeling in your stomach. That is of course until you get to THAT point. Again, fuck you Hiro Arikawa.

Absolutely has become among my favourite novels ever and I will be rereading it again at some point.

Lovely and poignant, but maybe not entirely my cuppa tea.

This is the first book I’ve ever read to make me cry. It’s so beautiful, i will never recover

pretty good, relatively inconsequential book about a man and a cat he loves, and that’s about it!

I wanted to like this way more than I did. The prose was basic and the story was dull. 4/5 for the concept but 2/5 for execution.
