The first and most important thing about this book, at least for me, is how clearly Jade exists as a bridge between the girls I knew growing up and the girl I was. My issues and the specifics of how I dealt with them were different, but I recognize the struggle to communicate in any meaningful way, the use of a less popular form of pop culture to try and paper over the holes, feeling on some level like at least some of my teachers understood me better than my own friends or family.

As for the rest of the story, it was fun and genuinely delightful to have a POV character genre-savvy enough to be calling out the story beats even as they were happening, but not quite genre-savvy enough (or her awareness too skewed by the trauma she was avoiding) to recognize her real place in it. It was incredibly relatable--but also incredibly frustrating--to watch her spin her wheels late in the story, trying to fit the escalating events into the version of the story she'd already decided it was, racing to figure it all out before the big reveal only to realize it was an option she'd abandoned ages ago. It was a necessary part of her final girl metamorphosis, though, so ultimately I can't bring myself to make any deductions for it.

I am, of course, diving right into the sequel within the next day or two, and the conclusion in March already sounds like it's gonna be phenomenal šŸ‘€

Iā€™m not sure if I extra enjoyed this book because Iā€™ve read so many BAD books lately, or if it really IS that good, so take this with a grain of salt. But WOW. One of my only gripes is that it touches on some themes that Iā€™m not 100% sure I love being talked abt from a teenage girlā€™s perspective written by a male author, but I think it was respectfully done.
Spoiler for my other complaint:
I wish that the conclusion/reveal of the killer DIDNā€™T have a supernatural element. I think the authorā€™s point of regarding real life not being like a horror/slasher movie, about things like gentrification & colonization being a type of horror and violence of their own, was backtracked a bit by letting jadeā€™s theory of a supernatural element be true at the end.

Also: cannot recommend the audio book enough, cara gee was amazing

This one had been on my TBR for awhile and Iā€™m glad I finally got to it! I think this maybe just isnā€™t my genre, so take my rating with a grain of salt because I think if you like horror, slashers, and donā€™t mind gore, youā€™d love it! I havenā€™t read books by Grady Hendrix but from what I hear in reviews of their books, maybe this is a similar genre!

I was highly entertained - the plot and the story were very interesting. Our FMC/narrator Jade wasā€¦ so wild, an unreliable narrator for the books. I wasnā€™t sure if anything she was saying was real or a figment of her wild imagination/bloody daydreams.

I think finding out why Jade is the way she is gave me a lot of empathy for her and helped me to understand why she lives breathes and only talks about slashers. I also loved Hardy, Mr. Holmes, and Letha as side characters! What ever happened to Shooting Glasses though? I thought he might end up playing more of a role in the ending but he really didnā€™t.

Besides the gore (which was extensive and descriptive), I ended up feeling like the motives behind the violence got lost and there was just a lot of chaos going on so by the end I wasnā€™t even sure who killed who šŸ™ˆ also, the chapters were wayyyy too long for me!

Rep: FMC is Native American Indian, side FMC black. Most other characters are white besides the FMCs familyā€™s.

āš ļø CW/TW: suicide attempt, violence, murder, blood/gore, injury detail, animal death, vomiting, alcoholism, misogyny, racism, reference to underage drinking, reference to pedophilia/rape/child abuse (in past), fire

This book absolutely did not work for me.  The characterā€™s inner monologue annoyed me so bad. It was like a stream of consciousness rather than prose. I feel like the things that were done to her were handled so irresponsibly and nobody handled her with the care she obviously needed. Including the beloved teacher and sheriff that were supposed to be functioning adults and were written to actually care about this girl. Couldā€™ve fooled me. Also, the ending was not my favorite. It felt like a cop-out.

I love Jade Daniels and I want nothing but the best for her.
I'm personally not a slasher fan, but I love horror and wrote a few college papers on slasher tropes and the theories behind slashers and why slashers are popular. I loved being able to read this without having to think to hard about the things Jade was talking about, because I already knew them too, and it all made sense. For someone that hadn't done research on slashers, though? I can't imagine them being able to read this easily.

But anyway, I love Jade Daniels. I love this book. I can't wait to read the next.
