Uhm, fuck me, cuz this was QUALITY.

The slasher vibes were real, the trope subversion was immaculate and Jade was a fucking fantastic lead character with the Author Notes just validating that sentiment to me even more when I read them.

I immediately went and purchased a copy for my own collection and will be waiting in avid anticipation for the sequel.

This bloody delivered in every way I wanted it to and every way I didn’t know I needed it to.

Go read this.

It's possible that the reason for my lower rating is that I listened to this book on audio and the narrator's voice sounded pretty cheery and sarcastic throughout the narration. So, I didn't find the book scary, thrilling, gory, sad, etc. at all, possibly because of the tone of voice it was read in. In fact, when bad things started happening, I was a bit confused as to whether it was really happening, or just in Jade's head, or what. So, I wasn't sure how I should react.

I did appreciate the references to slashers and the way the actual narrative paralleled Jade's slasher knowledge (like, when she would write an essay about red herrings and then the actual narrative would show a scene that really WAS a red herring). I imagine if I was a slasher fan, then I would have really enjoyed this book. I also didn't realize this was a series when I started/finished reading, so maybe that would've changed my enjoyment of the book - but I doubt I will continue with the series

🔪 BOOK REVIEW 🔪

MY HEART IS A CHAINSAW by Stephen Graham Jones

I absolutely fell into this world. I was so absorbed and terrified. To say I finished this book dizzy is an understatement. This is a book hangover on all levels.

Jade is an outsider in her town of well to do yt folx. Surrounded by well meaning teachers and a sherif who thinks she some  poor neglected teen with a dark past, but she’s just really into slasher movies. At least that’s what she tells everyone. I so deeply related to Jade on every level. When I was 17 I was also considered a trouble maker who just “had a lot going on at home”. Jade starts to see happenings around her small town that point to the beginnings of a slasher! Is it real? Or is it all in her head? And who is behind it all? Can she really trust anyone? And why doesn’t anyone believe her?!

Read this if you like:
🔪 Emo girls with soft hearts
🔪 70s and 80s slasher movies
🔪 All the slasher trivia
🔪 Bisexual rep
🔪 Biracial rep
🔪 Twisty plots that you can’t keep up with
🔪 Gore & more gore
🔪 You know everyone is eventually gonna die
🔪 Slow build ups
🔪 Lots of backstory for each person of interest

I’ll definitely be thinking of this one every October! I can’t wait to read more from this author!

This was a perfect read for the first week of October and I am absolutely delighted with it. It's a love letter to horror, but particularly to the slasher and the Final Girl. I watched Scream and IKWYDLS during the period of time I was reading this and it was just... *chef's kiss*

Ok, so...this is a literary horror novel that requires some dedication, *and* it's lots of fun, has so much heart and tenderness, and is also an absolute gore-fest, all at the same time. The writing is great, and so is the experience. I loved the main character and rooted so hard for her. It's an homage to movies and it would be a great one - gosh, I hope someone is working on that right now! This is a real contender for book of the year for me.
