The Hunger of the Gods by John Gwynne - Rating: 5/5⭐️

Lik-Rifa is out of her eternal prison. As Orka, Varg, and Elvar continue to travel Vigrið, they will embark on new journeys to seek their vengeances and hold their oaths. Raising a new age of resurrected Gods and bloodshed.

LIKES:
👍🏾 Not only do we get a map again, but we get a whole glossary of terms, characters, and creatures. AND a small summary of the first book for each character. As a reader who often forgets details of previous books even when I’m in love with them or just finished them, I appreciated this the absolute most.
👍🏾 Storyline picks up right where it left off from the first book.
👍🏾 I never thought I would admit how much I loved the slow pace of a book. But somehow this book did it. The slower parts really let me absorb the world, ideals, and characters. I couldn’t get enough of all the details. Let me take my time to really enjoy the book.
👍🏾 I didn’t expect to get more perspectives through Biórr and Guðvarr. To see the battle they had of being bad and good. Especially with their conflicting contrast between the inner thoughts and actions.
👍🏾 The main characters became even more of favorites. Varg’s continued theme of friendship and found family. Elvar became more fleshed out. Witnessing her development through the leadership of the Battle-Grim was impactful. Orka remains my favorite female fantasy character. Seeing her continued strength and determination to protect what she loves remains inspiring. She didn’t have as much character development (given her age and expertise), but it was made up for in the relationships she built with the side characters and beautiful battle scenes. Plus, it was nice to see more of their stories intertwine throughout the book.
👍🏾 Even though the book tackles heavy topics (such as kidnapping and slavery) with gory in details, we get these glimpses of real-life happiness and moments of connection. My favorite was probably Røkia not getting the game Einar was playing with the children.
👍🏾 My favorite battle scenes to come from a fantasy. There’s so much action and details to the gore, honor, and cowardliness of all of it entails. I found myself getting lost within the imagery of it all so many times that I forgot that I was even reading (in a good way) until one of my kids snapped me out of it.

DISLIKES:
👎🏾 Almost the whole novel centered around traveling. Going to one place, doing something briefly, and then onto the next destination. It was easy at times to forget where each character was or going to.

Overall, I’m clearly obsessed with this series and am on my way to preorder the third book!

A great sequel. The cast of characters are fun and feel important in the greater plot. The way he places his characters throughout the world is incredibly thoughtful.
Great action, world building, and use of magic.

One of the best, if not the best, fantasy books I have ever read. The first book sets the groundwork for all of the different plotlines to intertwine in the seconr book - and the author does it so gracefully while still staying true to the motivations and personalities of each character/group. Some BIG battles - and the way they're written is so immersive that I feel like I can hear axes crunching into flesh and the cries of warriors and monsters. Can't wait for the third book to come out!
