I was given an eARC of this book courtesy of the author in exchange for a honest review.

Unfortunately this book is not for me. From a technical standpoint the story is well written, the sentences are well crafted and up to the point where I decided to DNF the book the story flowed mostly without much issue. The main issue I had prior to the point I decided to DNF was with the story's villain character. From the first chapter the character was introduced it was clear that the author wanted this character to be portrait as a sociopath and for the reader to find this character utterly despicable. In this the author succeeded, however, the introduction of a very obvious sympathetic backstory of said villain in order to make the readers empathise and understand the character backfired (in my opinion). It did not feel organic, but rather like the author was following a mould or rules of writing a grimdark villain.

I was more than OK to ignore that suspension of disbelief and my annoyance with the character (a character can be annoying to me personally, but I can still follow their storyline) until the point in the book where my suspension of disbelief shattered and I could no longer continue to read nor find the reasons why I should "force" myself to continue. I hope other readers will have a more positive experience with this book, unfortunately I did not.
