Despite moments of sparkling dialogue, the book suffered from an almost complete lack of plot.

I really debated between three and four stars on this one. This was such a roller coaster. Parts were really good and parts were not so good. Personally, no matter how you spell it out, I don't enjoy books that begin with the heroine first discovering our hero while he's having sex with another woman. It's just weird. This was kind of a black cloud over my enjoyment of the rest of the book.

So bad beginning, but the middle was great. I really enjoyed our hero and how quickly he fell for the heroine. Their romance was sweet, funny, and sexy.

Finally the end...more specifically the last 80 pages was just boring. I didn't mind the secondary characters romance, but James could have wrapped it up a lot sooner. And the big secret?!?! That was just completely glossed over...and without giving anything away I thought the hero felt bad for the wrong reasons!

I ended up siding with four stars because overall I did really love these characters! They were so adorable. I like how James takes somewhat odd characters and pairs them with someone that appreciates these odd qualities. I know that's the basis of most romances, but it really stands out in James novels. They don't have to change the basis of their character...or how society thinks they should change to fall in love. Overall, an enjoyable read.

3 stars. I really liked the characters and the way the main characters communicated with each other. There was pretty much no plot? So thats why the 3 stars.

I also liked the side story line of the vicar and the other girl. Pretty cute.

I might read the other Wilde books but for now im gonna read the other Eloisa James books I bought and then see what next.

2020 reading challenge category: A book featuring one of the seven deadly sins (lust)

Charming but with pacing that's a bit uneven and a conflict that really isn't. Viola is lovely and I definitely empathized with her social anxiety, though hers was far worse than mine. It does seem to up and vanish somewhat abruptly, though; at first, she's working through it with the help of her stepsister, but then it's just suddenly...gone? Very strange. And the conflict here--that Devin is one of the main sources of Viola's anxiety, though neither of them really recognizes it at first--is really shoved off to the last minute and then presented as "Oh, it's not a big deal after all!" But I liked the interactions between them, the supporting characters, the scene in the closet, the interactions between the Wildes, all of that was lovely. I'm not sure it's absolutely my favorite of James' books, but it was a quick, charming read and I really enjoyed it.

i was sad and reminiscing on how romance books picked me up. seeking the same height, I picked this one up. "oh, what fortuitous timing! the library has this book available!"

it was the universe's joke on me. like a bad hand of poker, my fortune turned to a reading ruin. this only made me sadder and wanting more depth in my life (or, finding that my relationship with my cat has more depth than I thought it did). instead of drowning my sorrows in a nice romance novel, I drowned them in the headache painkillers I took to cure the pain this romance caused me. it's official: romance is dead for me. reading this beat my dead horse.

short summary: next time I need rainbows and sunshine, I should reach for a murder mystery.

(for all those who care about the actual content: it is a well written novel with characters who are endearing. a few years ago I might have found a besotted couple charming. if mind-crushing cuteness is what you need, James' novel will be good. it's a reliable read. cute, standard, but at least it's reliable)

It was sweet and uneventful.
