I liked the first part of this book and found it really easy to read. I could definitely have read more about and spent more time with Pierre and Bruno, I loved Bruno's gastronomic evening and the narration of the scene.

However, as the story veered more into the relationship between Anne and Hartmann and their back stories I just... Didn't care. I didn't think either of them were particularly likeable. Also really didn't like the message of the minister scandal... Not a good way to make your characters endearing. Quite a lot of creepy male gaze throughout the book really.

I haven't read anything else by Faulks and I'll read Birdsong at some point, but this wasn't the best entry into his work!

This is one of the books I feel will stay with me after finishing it since a lot of things Mr. Faulks talked about I didn't quite understand and had to look up... Whoops, it was a wonderful, telling story of a girl anguish and her finding love to a married man. I loved Mr. Faulks writing tone when he was describing places, weather and so forth. Good read.

If you are dying for something to read, just so you can look at letters and exercise your brain, then read this. It's like mental jellybeans.

It’s .. okay ? Something about the writing style meant I didn’t really emotionally connect with the characters. Also incredibly obviously written by a bloke, really didn’t enjoy the section about defending a paedophile (?)
