There was nothing necessarily wrong with this. It was pretty much a feel-good story. It was kind of cute, despite the age gap - did I mention this is age gap romance? Well, I have now. There was little conflict and the relationship was pretty straight forward. These characters actually communicate, people! However, it needed a bit of extra oomph and I feel like there was just not enough here to make it compelling. The emotional relationship moved too quickly here! In the end, it was fine. I enjoyed it well enough.
More of a 2.5 for me but rounding up because this was hot as hell! I actually think making it longer wouldn’t improved it, but I can’t fault a novella packed with steaminess.
My thoughts...
- I like Kayla. Kayla reminds me a lot of myself.
- If Michael Bradbury were a real person, I’d totally consider monogamy.
- Praise be! There is talk of silk scarves, plus-sized shopping, and other natural occurrences for a black woman without making them a spectacle or adding them in as an after-thought. In contrast to, say, “The Wedding Date.”
- I like that the Adler drama happened, but mostly because it was realistic and dealt with swiftly. We didn’t have to spend half the book with awkward communication and stupid jealousy ruining things just for the sake of drama.
- The inclusion & representation of LGBTQIA peoples and other races. Always a plus.
- I like the pacing of their relationship, they fell fast but not irrationally. They both maintained their sense of reason while continuing to grow in affection toward each other and navigated one another like mature adults. Coming from such different lives all together, I’m glad we didn’t have to spend mad pages on arguments over Michael working or Kayla taking time to think before making choices. This might actually be what I like the most and what would keep me reading.
- The lack of innuendos and euphemisms. There were some, but mostly conversational and amusing and not because the author was catering to some pearl clutchers. Nothing ruins the mood like coming upon “quivering member” and “center” in a sex scene.
- I’m likely not going to read the rest of the series because I want to keep them right where they are. I am content with what they have at the end of this chapter.

This was a good read! I think I also just found another romance author to love because now I'm addicted to Rebekah Weatherspoon's writing.

I know this is a novella and it’s supposed to be short; however, for me personally, it was way too fast and I couldn’t really connect with the characters. Most of the time, I was kinda rolling my eyes, because it just felt too rushed.
