I'm genuinely surprised how many Beverly Cleary books I didn't read back in the day. I loved the Ramona books, so...hmm. Lack of access, maybe?

This one, though, I don't think I would've appreciated nearly enough, only because of the time frame it was set in. No access to a library? Crazy talk. But now, I really did find it absolutely adorable and very sweet.

Also, it really makes me want to bake a pie. A real, crust from scratch, pie.

I may yet.

I just rediscovered this book with my 8 year old son. It brought back memories from the 5th grade. We read this in class and I remember the whole class chortling at Emily for her shocked exclamation when her Grandpa's tin lizzie hit 24 mph. In rediscovering Beverly Cleary's books, I am struck by the timeless stories and the outstanding writing. What a talent!

Read to Isabel. The writing is still charming Cleary but even though it’s a story set around the 1920s it feels dated in tone sometimes. It was mostly a series of highjinks but unlike with Ramona or Henry Huggins I didn’t feel like they help the reader get to know Emily or the time she lives in so well but it was a sweet entry point to discuss with my daughter what life was like for a girl around her age back then.

loved this Beverly Cleary way more than the other ones I've read recently. maybe because I feel like I relate to the main character more. I feel like the book has a good amount of action, humor, life learning lessons, but it also screams OUT OF DATE more so than the other Cleary's I've read because this one takes place in a small town in the rural country knocking it back even more years before the pub date. at the same time though, kids might get it as historical fiction vs it just being out of touch.

I love all of Beverly Cleary's characters, and it's fun that this book is more old fashioned than her others!

This was a cute story, but some chapters were better than others. A few were very funny, others just mildly amusing. This inconsistency brought my rating down a bit, but my nieces (ages 8 and 10) said they loved it. And, after all, it was written for children! :)

I grew up on Beverly Cleary and just finished reading this to my daughter. I don't think my daughter would have enjoyed reading it herself but we both enjoyed with my reading it out loud (the drunk hogs chapter was hilarious).
