3.2 AVERAGE

I picked this up because what's her face on BookTube rec'd it but yeah #SorryNotSorry this is pretty much a We Were Liars ripoff down to...pretty much everything.

this had so so so much potential. the setting was perfect. the characters were well developed. the mystery was intriguing enough.
the ending though?
the most predictable thing to have ever been written.
i wish i could get back the hours i spent reading this book because the culprit is mentioned in the synopsis of the book!!
i let out an actual groan when i got to the end and honestly i’m being generous by giving this 2 stars. the only good qualities were basically snuffed out by that overly disappointing end.

Review will be in SLJ magazine around March/April

In general, the writing style and story was rly concise, cutting out any unnecessary transitions or jumps in logic and relying on the readers common sense/ intelligence, which I thought was cool and I would have liked it. However I think it went a little tooooo far with the brevity bc the end result was a story that didn't feel fully formed or finished. I feel like Reese and the mc's relationship was left off in SUCH an unsatisfying way omfg and that was one of the only things getting me through the book too. I also think this wasn't a thriller really at all and the mystery felt kind of aimless, there were never enough clues. And while the mc came off overall as smart bc of the concise-ness she was hella dum
Spoiler for hanging out with Tristan even after lit rally everyone said he was dangerous. And he seemed dangerous from her personal experiences. Also the fact that he actually did turn out to be the bad guy all along was super annoying since it was sooo obvious from the beginning and he was really the only person it ever could have been the whole time. So that really undermined the entire mystery

Boring with a lazy written "mystery". Everyone in this story is so bland and one dimensional it hurts.

I'm using the Goodreads rating system here in that Two Stars = "It was OK". Not too much stands out about this book. I am certain that it is going to be forgettable for me. I'm probably not the right audience for this, it is YA and most every significant plot point in the book reminded me of the movies I watched and loved as a teenager. So, probably if I was younger I would have liked this much more than I did.

This book left me almost annoyed, the culprit was way too predictable and the main character Pearl ends up alone, she literally had three possible love interests!! Totally unsatisfying ending but I did like the setting and Pearl was an ok protagonist.

We start with a bang and then are transported into the future and to what Pearl’s life with her dad is like now. There is some suspense, lots of drama, tough subjects, and a big surprise right at the end. Even though it is a slow burn, this book was also quite the page-turner for me, and I was completely invested in finding out just what happened to Tristan’s parents. There is some sailing lingo that I wasn't super familiar with, but that in no way took away from the main plot of the book for me.

For some reason I'm always a fan of reading about rich kids engulfed in mystery, and The Lies They Tell definitely scratched that itch for me. This is a character-driven story which is part of the reason I think it is a slower burn, but it is also so much more than just a mystery. I really felt for Pearl and no matter what age you are, I don't think it's hard to connect to her. I listened to the audiobook and I thought Caitlin Davies' narration was a bit stilted, but other than that I really enjoyed listening to this one. If you are in the mood for a contemporary/mystery young adult novel that takes itself seriously I would recommend checking out The Lies They Tell. Just make sure you are prepared for a slow burn and not a fast-paced thriller.
