This book was so moving, there were moments that left me breathless - Miller has a way with words that seemed effortless but so well constructed.  It’s nothing like a memoir I’ve read before.  She had such strength of character and is to be commended for sharing her story in such a raw way.

When the Brock Turner news came out, I wrote an article about it on a blog for the non-profit that I am with that fights human trafficking. It was tragic to hear later on about how short his sentencing was for the assault against Chanel. She had gone by another name due to being anonymous to protect her identity, but she has written this to let us know her side of the story. I had read what she wrote that was released to the public after the sentencing went through, to give a glimpse of her own feelings, but now, in her book, I am really grateful to learn more. Considering the hardships she has gone through; I appreciate her candidness and her willingness to move forward the best to her ability. I will say, towards the end, she did repeat stuff she had already shared with us, but I understand why. She did get a little political at points, but that is because it was in association to the time period and what she was going through.

Where to even begin with a review for this book - Chanel is sexually assaulted whilst unconscious by Stanford rapist, Brock Turner. Not only does she have to relive everything through an unjust hearing and trial, reminded of it within headlines (which are not empathetic or sensitive in their reporting of the sexual assault itself) whilst trying to return to "normal life" which is anyone's guess where to start given there is no support offered by any institution, narrow it down in a Victim Impact Statement to then finally reclaiming her voice in this memoir; words will fall short to describe Chanel's courage and strength.

Everyone must read this book - it is incredibly triggering as it highlights severe issues with the criminal justice process and even lack of accountability, particularly by Stanford, where individuals who need the most help are penalised due to policies and processes but Chanel's words, particularly towards the end of the book, offers a message of solidarity, support and hope - I commend the way in which Chanel shifts the perspective on its head, stating that she is treating this an opportunity to fix a broken system - if the higher powers did give her words the recognition and acknowledge the recommendations she makes, it could really act as a preventative as opposed to a late/reactive measure and academic institutions must realise the role they play in student support, reaching out and being active in giving help to those who need it most.

There was some repetition which could have been cut out - but that's one for the editors. Does not in any way Chanel and the power of her words. It is beyond any rating but I am giving it 5* in the event it does affect the overall credit (rather than leaving it unrated).
