Meh. I thought, given my love of this time period, and the fact that it's YA, I would enjoy this so much more. Sadly, I was mostly bored. The characters were annoying, the plot convoluted (what, exactly, was the point of Loraine? She did nothing towards that finale...) and I didn't like any of them by the end. I am just generally disappointed by this book.
Plus, the story strayed heavily into cliched tropes and just generally racist bullshit. Even that made me yawn. It was so expected and BORING.

I am enchanted by the characters in this book trying to discover themselves in the Roarin' 1920s!

Sometimes when reading a fiction book you have to think about how young the young adult book is. There were some good points but her best friend character was so insufferable and the main characters acting out wasn’t really great. It was an okay read and I thought done characters were developed very well.
I also couldn't get into this story. I think the whole flipping back and forth between characters was disorienting. I think that the concept is cool and the look into a fascinating period in American history was very cool. This book is like a 20's version of Gossip Girl. So if you like drama and intrigue this book is definitely for you.

Was it well written? Not really. Did I have to read the phrase “you aren’t like other girls” in full sincerity THREE TIMES?? Yes. But, do I love drama and will never ever get enough of it? YES!!
meh. reasonably entertaining but not greatly compelling or original. switches back and forth between gloria (poor little rich girl just wants to be a jazz singer!) lorraine (i'm gloria's BFF and i'm so jealous of her i could just scream!) and clara (i'm gloria's innocent prude of a country cousin hiding a boatload of scandalous secrets!) as they sneak out to speakeasies and fall in love with all the wrong men. recommended for fans of anna godbersen, although it's not as steamy.
It's okay if you like reading a soap opera set in the 1920s surrounding 3 girls dealing with romance, scandal, and speakeasies. It was entertaining but I felt like the characters don't have much depth to them because the point of view kept jumping around each chapter. There's some pleasant plot surprises from time to time but I found the constant jump to each girls point of view jarring. Also I wish the 2 girls names weren't so similar when reading them. Gloria and Clara visually looked like the same name to me so at points I had to remind myself which character was which. Also, it took too long to get to the dramatic points and the big action of the story happens in the last few chapters and leaves you with a massive cliffhanger to set up for the next book. Don't know that I have the endurance to continue with the character/plot jumping to find out what happens next.
This was quite a fun trashy read, but a little too formulaic in the romance department for my taste...
There is so much I want to say about this book. Overall, I am in love with this book! And it is so funny because it was completely unexpected because I was looking for a fun and light book. Well from the first chapter of this book I was hooked. Ok with the title I thought it was a book about some young flappers in Chicago, and at the most basic level that what this book is about. Really I thought it was going to be all about partying, drinking and gangsters. I love history and I love the fact that the author really did her research about the period. Also I love the fact that story take place in Chicago, because it is my home and there is a little bit of Chicago history in this book. Most of all I heart this book because the story is an old one, but the author bring a few twist and turns, and I really did not see what was coming until the very end of the book. Which is always really good.
