I quit at 11%. Not cos it was bad necessarily but because I don't need to read a book about teenage rebellion set in the prohibition era in my 30s. I'm sure if I were younger I'd give it a proper go but it just isn't for me.
A young adult novel set in the roaring 20's, smack dab in the thick of it all in downtown Chicago. Gloria Carmody is a straight A student, socialite debutante who is engaged to Sebastian Grey. Her troubled cousin, Clara Knowles, comes to help with the wedding and get away from her secret past. Lorraine Dyer is Gloria's best friend, who happens to be a flapper, has some important choices to make regarding their friendship. Marcus Eastman is like a brother to Gloria, the object of Lorraine's unrequited love and a definite playboy. Together the four take the reader through the seedy, underground world of gangsters and flappers during the Prohibition Era in a quest to find themselves, and love.
This book was very hard for me to put down. In fact this is the first week for discussion on it for the Barnes and Noble First Look and I couldn't stop reading at each designated sections. I just was not able to! I had to know more, I had to know what Gloria, Clara, and Lorraine were going to do next. I loved reading a timed piece like this, from the 1920's. This is part of a series by Jillian Larkin, so it ends with a bang and leaves you wanting for more. Of course we'll be waiting until next year to get our hands on Ingenue.

I really liked learning about the 1920s in US History last year. The flappers, more independence, and speakeasies amazed me. Reading this book made me love the 1920s even more. I loved the characters and the storyline. I can't wait for the next book!
Love, love, love! I was sucked in from the beginning!! I sooo want to be a flapper now! Lol Can't wait to read the next one. :)
A fun, romantic, kind of soap-opera-y story set in 1923, when girls wanted to be "flappers" and bob their hair. The story switches between three girls, all wealthy socialites, and their adventures intertwine. Gloria, engaged to a rich young man, secretly wants to be a torch singer, and she falls in love with a black piano player. The scandal! Clara, her cousin, has come to Chicago from Pennsylvania and a secret life in NYC that she is trying to move beyond. But some secrets may be too big to hide...especially from Lorraine, the catty best friend who becomes very jealous of both Gloria and Clara. I had a lot of fun listening to this, although it seemed like it took a little while to get to the juicy bits. Nice romances and some mob-related action. A great setting and time period, and I learned one new piece of flapper slang: "barneymugging" means s.e.x.! Never heard of that one before!! The book's appropriate for 7th and 8th graders, who are reading Clique or Gossip Girl--there's nothing explicitly described but the dialogue and scenes suggest a little older. Lots of drinking of illegal booze. I am hooked and waiting for the sequel!
Had a bit of a slowdown in the middle, but otherwise a really good 20s flapper scene. I loved reading Clara’s POV a lot toward the ending. Hoping to see more Marcus in the upcoming stories as well.
I really wanted to like this book. When I found it in the library, my reaction was something like, "Flappers? Yaaasssss!!!!" The only storyline I was really interested in was Clara's. Didn't much care about the other girls. If I were to care...I would say there's still a bunch of loose ends. It wasn't totally terrible, but I probably won't continue the series.
This was good! Clara = Me, so like I genuinely felt like crying all the time when she did anything lol
Pretty much The Luxe, just in the Roaring Twenties/Prohibition. Not bad!
