This book is what the Magicians thinks it is.

Wow. Okay, that took a few unexpected turns, but I am here for it. This one started off pretty slow and it was tempting to put it down because I wasn't immediately pulled in, but I'm glad I stuck with it! After you start meeting the individual characters, the story picks up.

I wasn't sure exactly what to expect going into this one. It's fantasy but at the same time, it takes place in modern times. So, the fact that the characters kept talking about magic, mermaids, witches, mind reading, and texting their friends was a little jarring sometimes. After a few chapters, I started to get the rhythm of it and it wasn't quite as weird, but it would still occasionally trip me up.

The story concept is fascinating but I think at some points the world building fell a little flat. I liked the idea of bringing these 6 powerful people together to compete for a spot in the Alexandrian Society, and the stakes that are uncovered as the story progresses definitely kept me invested.

The characters are so intricate, well developed, and interesting. If I had to choose favorites, I'd side with Parisa and Nico. The chapters alternate between each character's POV, and for me, Parisa had the best story building moments. Nico was a close second but it was mostly because of his interactions with Gideon.

Poor Libby...no one liked her bangs...and they took every chance they could to mention it in their thoughts lol. It also got a little tedious and unnecessary for Libby and Nico to refer to each other by their last names every time they interacted. I get that they had that going on well before they went into the program, but it still got old very fast.

There's also a twist toward the end that I didn't see coming, but I really enjoyed how it played out. It set up the second book perfectly, and I'm pretty excited to read it.

If you're in the mood for a modern day fantasy with drama, murder, thrills, and mystery thrown in, this is an excellent choice!

The characters were pretty insufferable to me and nobody had any good convictions.
