Love the plot and the science magic mechanics and the world building.

But the dialog, characterization, sex scenes, and general tone leaned a little too into pulp for me. Pulp not in the sense of the old pulp novels but more like fanfic tumblr AU OC pulp.

This is a hard one for me to rate, I've wanted to read this for a while but found it got so caught up in it's own cleverness/overwriting that some of the story was lost, bogged down in the author's attempts to be profound.

Starting with the plot, to be honest, not much happened, the blurb is written to be so high stakes and yet the entire book was laden with longwinded descriptions of...nothing which made this read much more literary fiction than I'd have liked.

The characters were interesting but I'd have liked more info on their powers which didn't really get explored that much. I also found that some characters like Reina had no personality and only seemed to be used to further details other characters.

All of the characters spoke in a way that was so overwritten it felt like every conversation was to be intended as a battle of wits as to how CLEVER and PROFOUND they were but just added nothing.

I felt we didn't learn their driving forces, most of them were distinctly unlikeable making it hard to root for them.

Overall, disappointing, I had high expectations of a really rich high stakes, fast paced dark academia with a cat and mouse game and it was just extraordinarily dull.
