A very visual novel, lots of twists and turns. I enjoyed the connection to the characters and the story that was developed into an intricately engrossing novel as a whole. The ending tapered off for me though as I felt there were multiple plot holes, occurrences that were not explained to their full potential, leaving me with more than unsatisfying questions. If the ending had been just the slightest bit more thorough in its conclusion, I might have given this a higher rating. Bummer.
I read this book with my Best Friends in a book club we created during Quarantine.
I enjoyed the book quite a lot but the story didn't flow harmoniously together in some points.

3.5-4 star rating
(Might read again to clear some thoughts.)
I have to say this story is one hell of a ride.
Someone said that the writing is intense and I agree. Especially near the ending with the boys in captivity. My emotions were being tugged. I empathized with Aulus so much and seeing him have hope and then having it crushed. I got so attached to these kids that it destroyed my heart. I actually started crying.
(My little sibling enjoyed seeing me in pain. Though they hated my rants of theories.)
I really like this little detail of Aulus’s letters. He usually ends his letter with ‘Peace & Freedom’ however when he lost hope it changed to ‘Peace & Blessings’.
This is story was a bit slow for me to get through but towards the end it became much easier and I wanted to know how it ended.
I was also confused as to why the castle was such a big thing. Throughout the story I was just ‘why is the castle such a big thing?’ ‘why does it need to be completed’ that did get answered for me at the end of the story.
With the Gemini Thief, I had a lot of fun trying to discover who they were. I have actual notes of my ideas on who it could be. My thoughts went from ‘okay I have a ‘solid understanding’ on who it might be..’ to ‘sorry guys but everyone is guilty.’
That being said the reveal of the Gemini Thief was shocking. The little misdirection of saying it was Griff to showing it was actually Ruby. My mind was going 100 mph. The thought of Ruby being the Thief was in the back of my mind.
Overall this story was an entertaining book. Really made you think. Yes there are things here and there that threw me off or didn’t click in my head but I still enjoyed this book. -CJ

A Gemini Thief kidnaps three boys every year from June 1st to June 30th the following year and then releases them....Or did for the last ten years...but this year one of the boys turns up dead.
“Monsters don’t always look like monsters on the outside, and maybe they’re not always monsters...”
The Gemini thief can be anyone. Your pervert Uncle, your Father, your Mother, your creepy teacher...
The pretense of this story is fantastic and I enjoyed the main character Thea. She is determined and gritty and doesn’t let her age stand in the way of the answers she’s seeking. However, the story is a bit hard to follow. It is told from multiple POVs and bounces between timelines in a non-linear fashion.
By the time I got all the characters and timeline straight the story began to drag a bit. There were some unnecessary characters and some necessary things left out, like who is Elizabeth? In addition, for me the ending was a bit rushed and pulled together too neatly.

This was the perfect mystery thriller because the stakes remained high, there were so many times you're thrown off course (or are you?), everyone is a suspect, the characters are built out, and it's told in an epistolary format that keeps you fully in it. Perfect for October and ALL YEAR ROUND!
