Daphne is still recovering from a terrible case and is currently on bereavement leave. Struggling to stay out of her head, she is quickly pulled into another case by her boyfriend and head of Baltimore’s Violent Crimes Enforcement Team, Joseph.

Daphne is instantly drawn to this traumatized and scared little girl. She reminds Daphne of herself when she was a child and witnessed something horrible. Trying to get the girl to open up, Daphne suggests she visit her farm for some equine therapy. It works like a charm and with the help of Daphne’s colleagues; this brave little girl breaks her silence.

Karen Rose is quickly becoming one of my very favorite authors. Her suspenseful storytelling always has me holding my breath. Her characters are well-developed and her villains are always meticulously diabolical. This is an excellent, quick read for anyone looking for a new romantic suspense author.

Spoilers Ahead: So I didn’t realise it was a novella until after I bought it, and I must say, I haven’t read one before, so it has been an experience. I thought the pacing in this was really off, just because it went so fast, but that is the point of a novella so I can understand it - however, it’s not for me. The ending I thought was really abrupt, and it all felt rushed, and took the excitement away from it. The plot itself was really interesting, and I think it would have done well as a novel, but nonetheless, I’d say it’s a book that would be good to read on journeys, or just in one sitting.

Read this book in an hour. Have never read a novella before so had no idea how a short story pans out. This was ok, good plot and good writing style, but think I'll stick to full length books from now on.

Short and sweet story following the aftermath of Daphne and Joseph's book.

State Attorney Daphne Montgomery's been sidelined since the traumatic events involving her childhood abductor. When a six-year old girl is found near two dead people who are suspected to be her parents, FBI Agent Joseph Carter thinks Daphne is the ideal person to help the child find her voice.

This is a really short story but it most certainly delivers. The mystery is interesting and it was nice getting more of Daphne and Joseph. It wasn't predictable and I hadn't a clue until all was revealed. Well done.
