What a special book. As someone whose family and experience is threaded in many cultures and languages I have thoroughly enjoyed and rejoiced in this book. It has given me deeper understanding and interior strength to accept all my identities as my own. Thank you for that.
But even if you identify with only one culture or background this is a great doorway into this other reality and maybe a more nuanced approach to all our identities.
I wish there would be an edition after Brexit, Trump, Bolsonaro you name it.. we need it!

Cet essai cherche a donner quelques pistes pour expliquer pourquoi le besoin d'identité peut être à l'origine de déchirements et d'abominations entre les hommes. Partant de cette interrogation, Amin Maalouf en vient à toucher de plusieurs questions peu ou rarement posées dans ces termes : pourquoi l'appartenance religieuse est elle si imbriquée dans la définition de l'identité? Est ce la religion qui modèle une société ou l'inverse? Pourquoi une société en vient elle a rejeter sciemment la modernité? Quelle est l'impact de la mondialisation sur nos identités? Ses différents raisonnements sont faciles à suivre. Amin Maalouf, très prudent, reformule plusieurs fois ses idées pour être sur d'éviter les malentendus, prévient explicitement le lecteur lorsqu'il est volontairement caricatural et rappelle tout au long du livre que tous les sujets abordés sont complexes. Une lecture agréable et très intéressante!

Though it's really just the musings of a single man, I was quite taken by how well he articulates the way we justify violence against each other, the dangers of over-identification with any given group.

amin maalouf, connu pour ses romans, écrit d'un point de vu très particulier, un franco-libanais qui s'est installé en france dans les années 70, bien avant que la plupart des libanais sont arrivés en france. c'est aussi un point de vu très précieux à moi, la fille d'un franco-libanais élevé en france dans les années 60, un père qui m'a toujours fait pensé à l'histoire et notre place dans le monde, un père qui m'a apporté beaucoup de pensées sur l'identité et le soi. l'introduction et les premiers deux parties du livre m'ont vraiment parlé, et j'étais tellement touché par ses propos. cependant, je trouvais la troisième partie un peu superflue et même incomplet, que je crois est plutôt le résultat de hindsight, en lisant ce livre presque 30 ans après sa publication, 30 ans d'évènements impossible à prévoir au moment de la rédaction.
