I didn’t just read Jackal—I wrestled with it until the pieces clicked into place, and once they did, I was hooked. The shadow/dog/wolf/hunter/Jack creature as a supernatural embodiment of the racism woven into that small town hit me hard. It was haunting, sad, infuriating, empowering, and lyrical all at once. Watching Liz unravel the truth—about herself, her community, and the ugly legacy beneath it all—was both painful and deeply satisfying. A dark, smart, and unforgettable read.

4.5 stars! This was a wild ride! Please read this for the truly unique and thought provoking mystery/thriller/horror(?) book. The last quarter had me on the edge of my seat, I couldn’t finish it fast enough. The downright SPOOKY narration sprinkled amongst the book (for this I recommend the audiobook, the narrators did such a great job at bringing the SPOOKS). There was a moment where it all came together that literally made my jaw drop (if you’ve read this, it’s when you realize why exactly Black girls have been targeted.) It’s such an eerie play on topics of racism and Black women having to be the strongest and the best at everything.

A much better version of the last book I read. Still not perfect, and it dragged a bit at times. But I cared about the characters, and the twists kept coming. Thrilling.

This is a really great book.  Sad with how close it can hit to home. It can easily be a page turner. The mystery unravels well but you can figure it out pretty quickly.

At first I wasn’t convinced that I liked the narrator. At first she presented as neurotic and as the book goes on we lean heavily on her anxiety to give her a level of untrustworthiness. 

But the mystery of it! The creepiness! If you saw something, no you didn’t.
