Contemporary Romance

Polyamorous FMC

Tw: suicide, parental death, SA, Rape, emotional abuse, physical abuse, pedophilia, predatory behavior, grooming a minor

The start of this book is interesting. A 17yo, raised by her parent’s assistant, looses her narcissist parents to suicide and goes to live with her step uncle in the middle of nowhere… but then the FMC turns 18 and things take a turn that I knew was coming, but by the end I felt like I was reading a train wreck I wanted to just finish and be done with. I think the setting was the only thing I enjoyed about the story. The rest just was a giant red flag. I think I kept reading because I was interested in how the situation could be sustainable enough to be considered a happily ever after.

This… was not the book for me. I don’t enjoy reading about the romantic couples abusing each other. I don’t consider that romance.

All of the characters were sad and depressing. There wasn’t a single person in this book that knew what joy or contentment looked like. Every single person in this book needed interventional therapy. The men were all misogynistic and gross. And once they had their “turn” they basically disappear from the plot . How? What?

The POV shifts were fine, but the 1 POV from the MMC (who is barely in the book other than SA/R scenes) was written to make his internal monologue sound like an absolute psychopath.

This was definitely a “taboo romance”. Although there was not really anything romantic about it. The girl sleeps with her step-uncle and step-cousins, who are supposed to be alpha males, but didn’t get possessive when it came to their own family. Nope. The spice was very disjointed and flipped on and off like a switch. It read more like Stockholm syndrome. The only character that showed her any type of romance was her pedophile step-uncle.

As if it could get any worse, it was over written. There is more than enough plot with the step-family…. Absolutely no other plot tools were needed to add to the drama.

Thank you NetGalley and Berkeley Publishing Group for the Advanced eReader Copy of this book in exchange for my honest opinion.

I don’t even know what page I stoped but the last thing I remember about this book is
her getting raped on like a car whatever by the one that doesn’t speak I’m so extremely disgusted by this book and people that rate it at all because there is a limit obviously if she consented to a bit of rough play or whatever kink it was there’d be no issue but anyone actively reading and enjoying reading rape right infront of their eyes and rate it you’re so abhorrent this book was nothing but disgusting they might not have been biologically related but the 40 year old man she has sex with is her uncle that is enough for me to not continue this book. Penelope Douglas you are disgusting anyone that enjoys this book and found it such a good read or whatever you’re all disgraces to society and you need serious help

I saw a review that said “wtf is this book?” And I could not agree more. This book was OFF. Really distasteful writing and plot. I’m by no means someone who gets offended or believes in political correctness, but a female referring to her own genitalia as the “c-word”, is tasteless and just not for me. On top of that, the plot  doesn’t kick off until the mid 200 pages. Definitely read the content warnings on this one and good luck lol

i am so glad that it is over.

this book was anything but good and for the first time since i started making notes for my cr there is a list of things that were so wrong. and the list is very long.

and so instead of writing it all down i will simply copy and paste everything i wrote in the moment i read it. it is filled with spoilers so don’t read it unless you don’t mind them.

but basically - if you don’t want to read the detailed reaction - here is a summary
the guy she ends up with rapes her multiple times but she enjoys it while saying no so i guess that’s fine (wtf). her step uncle is a pedo for fucking a freshly eight teen year old girl. she doesn’t want the youngest one basically. everything is just fucked up here

notes:

why tf is she underage? she could have been at least 19 or something and in the will it could be stated that she needs to be a certain age until she can get her inheritance money or something. there was a way around it. this girl is my age and banging a dude over 40. but this is a pattern in pd books. take winter and damon.

sir, you are thinking about a seventeen year old girl and you having sex. and then you have sex with her few weeks later at the age of 40 something just after she turns 18. you are not right in the head

literal sex assault when he comes back from a hunt, he needed to be stopped by his brother since he wasn’t hearing all the no from her, and yet she still ends up with him

trying to get him to imagine he’s fûcking his dead lover from 20 years ago while they are having sex

her - gets injured and cries as it hurts
them (two literal brothers) - it would be a good time to get her to sleep with us

i don’t think brother x girl x brother is nice. it’s weird but that’s just my opinion

all the time they were having sex her arm and stitches didn’t hurt but suddenly when she wakes up she actually feels the pain. like what the hell?

she gets called a slut and spit on for sleeping with one man yet they are having orgies in their rooms every night. make it make sense

bro he calls her a cunt and a slut for no damn reason. he literally got sucked off in a barn and she watched and once he sees her escaping from his dad’s room he just straight up writes the word slut on her forehead and spits in her

yet another sexual assault when she’s sleeping. she could have chosen any of the three and she chose this one?

so much sexual assault in this book from ONE GUY and she ends up with him. just how. there was no romance at all

Fuck this book, chapter 6 has sexual assult that alluded to putting more fault in the fl than the man who assulted her because she ~secretly wanted it~. Literally made me want to simultaneously barf and punch the author in the face. How can you write that, especially as a women, when all too often rape and sexual assult is justified by men bc actually even though the women was sending "no" signals or screaming at me to stop I know she really wanted it. 🤢🤢 Gave up reading it after this because I don't even care to see if the author fixes this mistake later. On top of this, the uncle character is such a creep, he's literally double her age and yet the author writes in multiples scenes, even from his perspective, where he is creating sexual tension with her, AS A MINOR. Disgusting, don't read, how does this book have more than 3 stars.
