From the US cover and the blurb I thought this would be like a vampire version of A Certain Hunger, but sadly it wasn't. There are a few interesting ideas here, but they are drowned in dull details. I thought the main character was an idiot. Some mysteries in the book are just never resolved. All of this is difficult to get through because the prose is mediocre (which is something I rarely notice). I did think the art references were fun.

Going into this book, I found the concept really intriguing. A literary vampire novel with a new adult protagonist trying to overcome their true nature? Sign me up! However, ultimately I was let down by Woman, Eating. While I did like Lyd, the rest of the book bored me. I really wish that Kohda had followed up on the threads of colonialism and identity instead of dropping them in favor of a (lame) romance. There were so many secondary characters I wanted to know more about! Especially Lyd's parents. There were also many moments where something seemed about to happen and then... Pretty much nothing happened. And while I usually love plotless books, this book just didn't work for me.

'I don't know where the human and demon in me connect, whether there are roots that sprout from the demon and reach for and attach onto the human, or vice versa. Both live because the other exists. The demon survives off the blood my human body digests. And the demon, in turn, keeps my human heart very slowly pumping - at least, this is what my mum told me when I was young.'

This book was not what I was expecting at all.
The writing at times is so beautiful and took my breath away other times sentences just fell short or made little to no impact.
Something was missing for me sadly and I'm gutted because from the premise it sounded right up my street.
