I've always been behind the counterculture and I honestly read this book just so I could tear it to shreds, and was surprised to find myself burning through this book at the velocity that I did - the writing is so intensely beautiful, some of the best I've ever read, it has an impeccable flow that is unbroken save for the jarring first-person sections that pop up here and there, gently examining the lives and minds of people in a rush of vivid, bittersweet vignettes, dripping with human frailty, and in this way channels the beauty of the sprawling complexity of life. It takes a tumble into melodrama towards the end, and it saddens me that an author whose writing is so well-suited to bring out the beauty in life would tend towards such a life-denying ending. There's also a keen sense of artificiality that pops here and there, plenty of suspensions of disbelief (i am looking at you, the character of andy contractor), but the writing seems to eclipse everything for me from both an objective and subjective standpoint, there are moments of such sheer beauty that shine through, and this is what Yanahigara seems to be best at constructing, these atomic duets of horror and wonder, the two arising from each other, the two inseparable from each other, the quintessential essence of human life.
