I would not recommend this book to my worst enemy. Just page and page and page of misery.
Hangs Yanagihara is an exceptional writer. Her mastery of language is mind blowing. She does a great job of writing a book mostly about everyday life without it dragging and losing the reader. After seeing and hearing about this book I expected to be completely crushed but it was predictable and at times monotonous (“im sorry”). I didn’t cry at all, but was moved at times. I appreciate the symbolism of Jude’s story being told completely in the third person while other points of view are told in first person to show how deeply closed off he keeps himself. It was easy to tell early on that Willem and Jude would end up together and that at the end Jude would finally commit suicide. As someone who has struggled with mental illness it was almost scary how accurate Jude’s internal monologue was for how disorganized thought patterns occur and persist in mental illness. From a medical perspective it felt well done and accurate. Overall I liked this book. It is devastatingly beautiful. I was not expecting a happy ending so there was no let down for me at the end. I enjoyed the interpersonal relationships and particularly the adoption and Jude’s relationship with Harold and Julia. I would be very selective with who I recommend it to.
