I thought this was a well-written tale if a bit depressing. Korsten, the main character, was a little whiny and morose, but not as severe as Thomas Covenant. I found the magic system to be interesting and the villains menacing.
The sex scenes were very tastefully presented, even the torturous ones.

This book was a pleasant surprise. It is so well-written, it just sucked me right in. There are really two parts to the book, it's more like two books in one. And it has a cliff-hanger ending, just waiting for a sequel. As long as a sequel is coming, I'll be happy.
