Hard to give this a rating; mixed feelings. It was undoubtedly entertaining, and I appreciated the good-things-out-of-tragedy theme, but I feel like writing "universal genius" children is kind of a cop-out. And Cheddar's family are *still* wondering what happened to their beloved cat.

Every. Single. Character. Is super strange. But even so, Every. Single. Character. Is super wonderful.
I will not confirm how many times I got teary eyed, but I will say it was a good range of happy tears and sad tears.

There will probably be Newbery buzz about this book. Counting by 7s has believable, memorable, well-developed characters, even if some aspects of them are painted with broad strokes. I think that Counting with 7s is great book that reads believably about a child coping with the grief of losing her parents and the uncertainty of her future while managing to still be a hopeful and funny (sometimes sarcastic) novel appropriate for middle grade readers.
I have a few qualms with the book, which don't ruin the overall experience, but which I just wanted to mention. Although Sloan switches to tell the thoughts/feelings of the different characters, the voices all read the same, which could partially be because she was writing in third person. The other thing that I found bothersome was that, even taking into consideration that Willow is a genius, her voice in the novel doesn't sound like a 12-year-old; furthermore, Willow at the beginning of the novel behaves more like an 8-year-old than a 12-year-old. The last thing that bothered me a little bit was that Sloan is very obvious about frequently using plant metaphors for Life Lessons. It wasn't too obtrusive, and I think that the novel was well-written and appropriate, especially for one dealing with complex, emotional topics, for the intended age group

This is difficult, decent writing, compelling concept/storyline, but, but, I just wasn't in it. Somewhere something got lost, it I missed the point. It's a quick read, and worth a look, it just wasn't for me.
