This book shouldn't work as well as it does; the basic story has been done before, the requisite amount of personal tragedy for a young adult novel is present, and a large portion of the plot is implausible. Yet I found the end result to be rather charming and heartwarming. I completely bought Willow as a realistic preteen genius afflicted with social ineptitude, and Sloan does a nice job of keeping the story from becoming too mawkish.
This is a book about a misfit girl who loses her family, but ends up building her own. In the process, she is changed and she changes those around her. It's a book about love and loss and friendship and, ultimately, family.
