This is a very endearing book, with a wonderful, straight-forward writing style. I would have given it a higher rating, but I felt that some elements were not developed enough, most particularly the main character's genius, and the death of her parents. However, this is very enjoyable to read, warm, and very optimistic, and I admire it.
If you can find the characters and the misadventures of an unnervingly precocious protagonist, an infuriatingly inept school counselor, and some adults with a whole lot of luck believable enough (and you find paragraphs superfluous), this sweet story will tap into your emotions for sure. Sloan hits the mail on the head when it comes to processing and dealing with grief.

I just loved being inside Willow’s thoughts. Rational thoughts.
“Apples grow on apple trees. And cherries grow on cherry trees. But we don’t say that an acorn grows on an acorn tree. Things like that are interesting.”
“All reality, I decide, is a blender where hopes and dreams are mixed with fear and despair.”
“What was a rose before it was a rose? It was the soil and the sky and the rain and the sun.”
“I’ll be ready. I’m not sure for what exactly. But maybe that’s what being ready really means.”

Willow was adopted when she was a baby and her whole family consisted of her adoptive parents. On one terrible day, her parents are both killed in a car accident. While Willow is a genius and can think beyond even many of the adults surrounding her, she still seeks support and builds with others in her community. When this tragic event happened, Willow was visiting her guidance counselor, who had taken an interest in her intelligence. Joined by her guidance counselor's other special cases, Willow soon finds friends.
All of the characters are unique and well developed. Willow's voice is refreshing and interesting. I love how all of the characters push each other to become better versions of themselves.

Very sweet. Like a man called Ove, this girl wins a lot of hearts and minds after terrible tragedy.
