Another brilliant instalment. And no, it's not getting better for Kellen. There was one scene that was almost too much and that's saying something.
Although the main antagonist wasn't hard to figure out this time - or maybe I've just become too distrusting of just about anyone, it was still an exhilarating read. I can't stress enough how much I love the self-depreciating humour. I'd probably read any kind of plot or not-plot if Kellen is telling it. (Or Falcio for that matter).
Best thing, I'm really excited for the final instalment now, starting tomorrow. I have a faint idea what's going to happen, since threads will be coming together now, but I'm excited to see, where it all ends.

This got weird and didn't feel like part of the series. It felt more like a super long novella that didn't really connect but was part of the overall arc

I have really gotten into this series over time. I liked this one, a lot. I enjoyed the political intrigue and appreciate how much Kellen has grown over the past few books. The ending of this one was great too, I can't wait to see how the series ends.

I'm also very excited about the upcoming Ferius book, though I also hope she shows up in the next book in this series. I miss her!

In the last few years, Sebastien de Castell has become one of my favorite authors. His Greatcoats series is a masterpiece. His Spellslinger series up there, too. Geared more toward a YA crowd, the adventures of Kellen Argos is a fun romp, well worthy of reading. With the penultimate installment of this series, you can see the plane is landing, but you don't want the flight to be over.

Kellen finds himself in Darome, a country that exists inside of an intricate series of royal court machinations. Who is lying? Who is your friend? Who is your enemy? In Darome, the answer to those questions are Everyone, No One, and Everyone.

One of the things that de Castell does better than almost any author I've ever read is torture the protagonist. In almost every book he's written, de Castell invents some new method to lower his protagonist to a breaking point, and then somehow get him out of it in a clever and heroic method. Falcio Val Mond in the Greatcoats started this habit of his, but Kellen carries the torch of enduring abuse from the author quite well. At one point in QUEENSLAYER, I remember putting the book down and trying to think my way out of the predicament that Kellen found himself in, and I figured he was done. He was defeated, totally and utterly. In my mind, there was no way out of the trap that de Castell had thrown him in, but somehow Kellen figured out a way to beat the odds and punish the people who needed to be punished.

I love this series. I'll be sad to see it end. However, when it does when the sixth book comes out, it will be a series that will stand the test of time. This book is well worth your attentions.

Well. I can’t even respond to all the political goings on in this book! There are so many, and it’s so complication. De Castell does an amazing job of bringing that home to the reader. Nothing is ever clear and I was definitely kept guessing the whole way.

I loved Queen Ginevra, she may be 11 but she is made of steel and awesomeness.

And Kellen continues to be his foolhardy self. I like how much is made of him being a coward here, and how he’s coming to terms with his warring instincts. I’m with Reichis, he needs to do better.

Pros: Some good new characters, especially the queen, compelling political intrigue, nice plot twist at the end.

Cons: As with the other books, this character is useless, the shadow cat again gets injured, and the plot is similar in the way it tortures the main character over and over.

As promised my review.

Having followed Kellen & Reichis this far on their adventures "Queenslayer" did NOT disappoint. De Castell does a wonderful job with an incredibly intricate plot & introducing several new characters into the world. I felt it had a several Greatcoats moments with Daroman queen being an 11 year-old girl & the amount of court intrigue that was going on around her, it all felt very Tristian. There were several moments that had me feeling a little uncomfortable (white binder) while other scenes I wanted Kellen to be the badass he is suppose to be.
Kellen is struggling with who he wants to be through out this book still, is he a hero/villain? He's been on the the run for a couple of years & still seems to be just as naive as he was in the first book "Spellslinger". For a guy that is suppose to be a clever still seems to be led through the story. I also find it slightly annoying that his sister Shalla shows up wherever Kellen is. The ending felt emotionless & left me wondering why.
Overall I would still recommend this series to anyone that asked me & I have already pre-ordered book 6 for the finale of this series.
