Crafty Cat works her crafty magic once again. In this adventure her weapons of choice are marvelous markers, wiggly wire, pretty polka dots, pointy pins, beautiful buttons, colorful cardboard, colored pencils, and gluesticks. I like the little sidebar conversations with the clouds, plants, and animals. :-)

I received this ARC from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

I did not read the first book in this series previously, but still enjoyed this one. It would be fun to read as a series, but is also good for a child to pick up midway through.

Birdie (A.K.A. Crafty Cat) is a huge crafting fan and cannot wait for a special craft day at her school during the summer. On this day she must learn how to understand other people's interests, how to navigate working with a bully, and how to show her emotions.

On craft day the students are working on monster crafts. These monster crafts are great indicators of the feelings that everyone has inside. What is really cool is that this book has a how-to for each of the crafts in the back!

This book is full of great vocabulary words, as well as how to handle difficult situations.

A good book for a reluctant reader, as it is more along the lines of a graphic novel.

funny lighthearted fast-paced
  • Plot- or character-driven? A mix
  • Strong character development? Yes
  • Loveable characters? Yes
  • Diverse cast of characters? No
  • Flaws of characters a main focus? It's complicated

This is a fabulous little graphic novel for early readers.   Lots of SEL opportunities, but cute and funny too.

Crafty Cat is at it again! This time she is excited about participating in a daylong craft camp being held at her school. On the way there she makes compromises with her friend who does not want to go to school for a craft camp: After they camp, they will play the friend's favorite game and Crafty Cat will have to stay by her friend's side even during his victory dance.

Camp proves to be a disappointment to Crafty Cat because, among other things, Anya is bullying her throughout. However, by the end of the book Crafty Cat, and readers who follow the instructions included in the last pages of the book, will have created some pretty cool things and learned valuable lessons about what friends do for each other.

My tween enjoyed this quite a lot more than I did. I found it mass-produced.

I've been upfront about this before. I am tired of the mean girl plot. I'm tired of the bully who is there just to be a bully. At the summer camp, the mean girl, for reasons that are never stated beyond the informed attribute that she is a bully likes to be first with everything. For craft time, she races through every project, even the group ones, to be first.

Birdie is in 2nd grade. She loves to craft and has an alter ego that no one can see called Crafty Cat. Crafty cat has helped Birdie get out of embarrassing and other difficult situations in the past and will need to again when Birdie and best friend Evan go to craft camp at school.

Second in the series but stands alone just fine. At the back of the book are directions for making all the crafts that were shown throughout the story. Students in grades K-3 will definitely be able to relate to the characters and situations. Colors are muted browns, greens, blues, and yellows. Illustrations are clear and visually interesting. Their simplicity is a perfect match for the intended audience.

ok. So there is a glaring misspelling on the first few pages and this seems a little niche. I do love the craft ideas in the back and I bet my daughter (9) would totally read this and enjoy it. I don't know exactly what I disliked about this, perhaps the coloring or all of the white space aorund the smaller panels, but something turned me off. It looks like this book gets another year before publication so hopefully some of these things can be fixed

These books are about so much more than crafting!

This is cute and unsurprisingly will be good for crafty kids. I didn't really get the girl/cat transformation (maybe that's more of a thing in the first volume?) but the little story about the mean girl was interesting. My favorite characters were the teachers because, well, I'm an adult. And a librarian. I like that all the crafts are explained in the back, so readers can make them too. They're creative crafts!
