The made up land that they’re both obsessed with kept getting in my way. I’m not sure why (normally I love a made up land!) but every time they talked about the language or the colors or whatever, I felt myself fall out of the story. I liked the central conceit a lot, and will probably investigate other books in the series.

Ugh. Too much Zamar. I think this is my least favorite Amanda Quick book so far. Also, Imogen's excruciating naivete was too awful to be funny. Actually i liked Matthias more than many other AQ heroes, but again there were times when his eternal struggle with his " ghosts" was just not plausible. But I did finish it. Some of the humorous bits from peripheral characters -- like the landlady Mrs. Vine -- were really funny. Decided to take a break from AQ after this one. But I'll be back to read more, I'm sure. Ehh. Mixed bag; mostly ehh.
Was enjoyable overall, found it quite predictable.
I guess I should not tell people I like romance novels. I don't read them all that often, but I do enjoy them every so often. I find that the ones by Amanda Quick are relatively well written. They are easy to pick up and put down on vacation. Mischief was pretty fun.
This is my first romance novel. I remember it fondly - I read it back, maybe six years ago, and had to read it all over again. I always associated romance with Harlequin and that stuff my mother would tell me as a kid, "You can read anything you want, just not in that section until you're older." Looking back, I'm surprised I listened...
Regardless, the book itself I enjoyed immensely. It circles around "Immodest" Imogen Waterstone and "Cold-Blooded" Colchester. Imogen is on a hunt for the real reason her good friend died, and what better way than to enter society again? After all, that's where all the Lords and Ladies are normally.
So she comes up with this fantastic way of asking Colchester to help, based on a debt he owed to her Uncle...which her Uncle left to Imogen in his will. He'll pretend to pursue her because she supposedly owns the map to an ancient Zamarian (yes, made up) artifact that they're both interested in, being lovers of that ancient culture. It helps bind them together throughout the four hundred or so pages.
I think the part that made me like the novel so much more is the fact that during this conversation, Imogen gets it into her head that "Cold-Blooded" Colchester suffers from weak nerves. The way the author plays on that throughout the rest of the novel is good for some laughter.
All in all, I really enjoyed reading this. The characters made me smile, the situations were just ridiculous at some points (in a good way), and there's even a touch of mystery in it to keep me guessing. Would (and have) read it again anytime.

"Immodest Imogen" is not too worried about her reputation, after all it is beyond redemption, and determined to avenge her friend's death. To do this she call's in her uncle's dept to "Cold-blooded Colchester. Sparks fly between Imogen and Colchester, but what raises this story above the average for me is the overcoming of misunderstandings and the acceptance of friends.
I thought that I might like this with a second read, years later.
Imogene is so willfully stupid. I cannot help.but dislike her.
