You know what. I'm giving this 3 stars. Objectively, this book entertained me much more than I thought.
I have no idea why I decided to listen to it. It's been at least 13 years since I read Shatter me and even then, I didn't like it very much. And in the following years, I've found myself agreeing with many not-amazing opinions about that book. I have no idea how I'd feel about it if I reread it now, and I'd rather not try.
And then I found the audiobook version of Unravel me and realized that maybe I was a little bit curious. What was the worst that could happen? I could always just stop listening!
I have to say, at first, I was tempted to give up. Tahereh Mafi's writing style is not my favorite. I found myself getting unnerved by the constant figures of speech, by the repetitions, by Juliette's tendencies to spiral very fast very often. By the absolutely nothingness that was her romance with Adam.
AND THEN. Then something switched. And suddenly, everything became fucking hilarious.
I still don't particularly like Mafi's writing style because I find it a bit excessive, but I'll give her that, it's fun as hell and good on her for writing how she feels like writing. Juliette is constantly feeling her bones breaking, her body exploding, her gut getting punched, and she thinks that she is dying in imaginative ways more times than I can count, and it's hysterical. She made me chuckle a few times and I can appreciate that.
Juliette is also such a fun character to follow! At first, I felt like she was a bit of a drag, and she is - she keeps feeling guilty and hating on herself when maybe she should be worrying about more pressing things - but like. That's fine. Considering her backstory, I can see why she acts like that, and it's still. So funny! Like, she constantly thinks about
- Adam
- not being able to make friends
- how awful she is
- Adam
- how nice it is to touch Adam
- omg Warner
- how Warner is SO PRETTY
- how much lonely she feels
- how awful she is
- Warner ... Adam ... Warner -
She is the most teenage girl with social skill issues, and all of that while being part of the resistance in an authoritarian, dystopic world. What a legend. I also liked that she started to get angry and a bit more assertive.
Besides, Kenji and Warner are fun too and their interactions with Juliette are quite entertaining. I enjoyed Kenji calling her out constantly quite a lot.
This book still has a lot of problems, especially concerning the worldbuilding and the writing, but eh, I wasn't listening to this book for the worldbuilding. Sometimes, you just want to read something light and fun and I think this is exactly that.

Felt like a filler for the most part, at least 40% of it was Adam and Juliette pissing me off and it should've definitely been shorter
