what on earth???? i don’t even know what genre this is. it was really all over the place. i thought it was a rom com?? but it … was not.

i will say my fave trope is the “journalist written by someone who doesn’t know how journalists do their jobs” and there was PLENTY of that in this one!

I don’t quite know how to feel about this book. The story was interesting and engaging enough to keep me reading. I especially liked the first half. But I didn’t quite like the characters or the romance aspect of it, despite having picked up this book because I thought it was a romance. And I think that there was a lot of plot and twists but not enough dissection thru the characters’ POVs or conversations to kind process events with and for the reader. Which ultimately made me feel like the protagonists weren’t connecting or engaging with the story themselves, just going thru the motions and setting up for the next big reveal and twist.

I think it’s worth a read overall though. Definitely read thru the trigger warnings first tho.

This is my kind of romance, it is there but there is a story that is driving the book. I love that there is so much to the story and it being set down the street from me didn't hurt.

All characters felt like real people and not just ends to a means or ways to more the plot.

I will warn there is a part that I cried and many others would if they have had similar experiences. So be warned it is now all rainbows and romance.

If you love mystery, the supernatural, big dogs, old cats, or Portland Metro you may find a piece of this one you will like.

****Note***
I will say this book talks a lot about death, in MANY ways, as well as the things that cause it. So make sure you're in the right mindspace for this before jumping in.

My favorite read of the year so far. These characters are so well written in my opinion. Their actions, their pain, their connection. I also love that the romance isn’t the main storyline. In short, it’s a story that shows just what you can face when you have someone that has your back despite your differences.

Had high expectations for this book, but was really let down. The writing was odd, the characters were lacking, and there were pretty heavy religious aspects to the book that I did not enjoy and really wasn’t expecting. This was the most aggressively “meh” book I’ve read in 2023 so far, considering the main character was a psychic, the plot included a murder mystery, and there was (supposedly??) a ‘steamy’ romance. How was this boring?????? I don’t know, but it still somehow managed.

Amazing book. A truly unique romance and mystery that was light hearted but still deeply powerful and beautiful and full of thoughts in humanity. Sylvie and Thomas, a successful physic medium and doubting journalist, respectively, bring the enemies-to-lovers, forced-proximity, only-one-bed tropes to life in a way that doesn’t feel cliche. The mystery of Sylvie’s past was captivating and kept me turning the pages. While it wasn’t necessarily full of twists and turns, it wasn’t predictable and definitely held my attention. I loved Thomas’s love for Sylvie’s kindness, even as he dislikes what she does and even as she doubts her own kindness. I loved moose and Chris as the most sweet animal sidekicks. I loved that when Sylvie learns the truth of her past, she uses it only for her own closure and to help others; something incredibly kind and generous of her considering the pain it had caused her throughout her life. While we don’t find out more of what happens with her parents, i loved reading their complicated relationship — they practically disowned her but still tried to protect her.

Overall, a fantastic story with an original concept.

Thank you, Berkley Publishing, for the gifted copy of Some of It Was Real. 🔮 {partner}

Genre: Fiction
Trope: Romance/Mystery
Format: 📖
Pub Date: 7.26.2022
Star Rating: ☆☆☆☆.5

"If someone you loved met a violent end or suffered an illness before passing, that wasn't their life. It was all the years before then - every joy, celebration, adventure, and love. Death is only a moment."

I went into Some of It Was Real thinking it would mainly be a romance — I was very wrong. The first 100 pages of this book had an exceptional tense undertone. I kept telling myself, 'one more chapter, one more chapter,' until I finally had to force myself to put the book down. But, once I had set the book down, I wanted to pick it up again and see where the story would take me.

Psychics and mediums have always been an interest of mine. Do I know that there are fakes out there who scam people? Yes. But, I think there are people out there who are authentic. So, amongst all the drama of this story, I was still cheering for Sylvie.

As for the characters, I loved Sylvie. I knew she came with a lot of baggage (her parents treat her terribly), but I still liked her. I didn't love Thomas; he was too wishy-washy for me. I wanted him to either get on with it or get over it. But, the stars of the show? They were Moose and Chris (dog and cat). They were my favorites, and I was a mess reading the chapters that focused on Chris' health decline.

🔎 Tense - more of a mystery than I expected
😤🥰 Enemies to lovers romance
📖 One more chapter.. one more chapter
🐕🐈 Chris & Moose

❌ - This story deals with death (of all kinds), but the most brutal chapter for me was losing Chris (no spoiler, you know it's coming from the first encounter). The death of an animal is never easy, especially when that animal has been with us for almost our whole life.

It was really easy to get into this book, especially with the sort of mystery around whether Sylvie actually has powers as well as her enigmatic background. I thought the pacing was spot-on, so their conflicting feelings about one another felt believable despite the rather short timeframe that they spent together. I loved all of the layers to each of their pasts and how they entwined to bring Sylvie and Thomas together. There is a lot of heart in this book, and there's also a lot of pain, but the writing was deft and delicate, so the story didn't feel overly heavy despite that.
